Hired on Thumbtack

We hired Mickey with the goal of putting in a bedroom in our semi finished basement. The level of unprofessional-ism , inexperience, and lack of basic construction methods that were demonstrated were appalling. I had layed out specific plans up front, on where the walls needed to be and what the overall plan was and i detailed every part of my plan, and at no time were those instructions followed. I would explain or show where a wall needed to be, only to check a few hours later to find out those plans were not followed at all. Nor was I informed that there was a change to the plan. Also, he couldn't even frame the walls correctly. I had purchased 16 inch sound proofing insulation along with a 32 inch door. The studs were put up 24 inches on center instead of 16 to accommodate the 16 inch insulation, and the framing for the door opening was spaced at 32 inches, when it needed to be 34 inches to accommodate the door and the door frame. He also refused to attach the one wall that I wanted to be built directly underneath a steel i beam. His plan was to float the wall freely and just shim it in to place underneath the I beam. I could go on and on about the mistakes that were made, but the BIGGEST issue is that he completely ignored my very detailed plans, which were discussed numerous times, instead doing what he thought was easier in order to try to get the job done quicker and cheaper. He walked out on the job after the second day, stating that I was HOSTILE toward him, when I had discussed and stated that what he had done was wrong, and needed to correct his mistakes. In the end I had to tear down all of the framing that he had put up because it was so shoddy and full of mistakes. Hire this contractor at your own peril.

Details: 1 room • Drywall • No, I will need the professional to provide materials and parts • Two-story building • 10 - 50 years old • Home

Mickey Nagasaki's reply
I understand how you might feel this way. The fact remains that after countless efforts made by my team, to accommodate your frequent change request; you still expressed discontent and hostility. It was clear to me that our client / contractor relationship was not a good fit. Therefore, I instructed my crew to pack up our tools and clean up the work site. In the interest of not wasting your / our time, we decided to part ways. I stand by my work and strive to go the extra mile. You have not and will not be billed for the labor we provided. Best of luck in your future projects.
