Introduction: I have a B.M. in jazz studies and performance (guitar) from William Paterson University, which has a world-renowned jazz program. Though I studied jazz and classical music academically, I also have a background in rock and play and teach a wide variety of styles including: rock, pop, jazz, R&B, classical, blues, and more. I have over 15 years of professional performance and teaching experience. I help students unlock their full musical potential by developing personalized lesson plans that I build according to the students interests, goals, and favorite artists/songs. Lesson plans are based on a structured order of songs to learn which take the student through beginner to advanced levels of playing, ear training, proper technique, and musical concepts/music theory. This keeps the focus on the songs and having fun while ensuring that the proper musical knowledge is being transmitted to maximize musical growth. Of course, if any student wants to focus more on the technical side and delve deeply into a particular area, then we will certainly do so. Rich is the best guitar instructor I’ve had the pleasure of working with. As a working professional, I don’t always show up prepared for lessons as much as I would liked to be, but we always made the best of it. I saw noticeable improvement in my playing and understanding of music theory while working together. It helps that he is very organized — our lessons were well documented and he is generous to the wealth of resources/exercises he has access to. Outside of lessons, he is very responsive with emails if you ever have follow up questions or want clarification. It’s rare to come across someone as dedicated to creating a safe, non-judgmental space for their students. I really appreciated how flexible and communicative Rich is — he really takes time to understand your needs. Would highly recommend to anyone! A great balance of expertise and a passionate educator. You won’t regret working with him.

I taught myself guitar many years ago. Over the years, I've had a few teachers to selectively improve my music theory and playing style. Rich is by far the best teacher I've ever had. He is very knowledgeable and professional in his work. He's also been incredibly accommodating, adjusting the lessons to fit what I need. I’ve been working with Rich for about 6 months now. Having had little to no prior experience with playing guitar, I’ve come an incredibly long way in a short amount of time! Every week he tailors our lessons to both my new curiosities and our past lessons and creates google docs for easy review on my own time between lessons. From basic handling to music theories, we’ve discussed so much! He even found music I’d been excited to learn and changed the sheet music on his own time for better playability. What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
First, I get to know the student and their goals/musical interests. Then I design a personalized lesson plan for them that takes their goals into consideration and combines what they need to know to become successful musicians - ear training, proper technique, classic guitar songs/repertoire - with their favorite songs to keep them motivated and having fun while learning.
