What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
First I offer a Free Consultation. This gives me the opportunity to meet the client and their dog. There I can explain my services and the different methods of training to make sure it is a good fit for them and their dog. The consultation is optional, but its always best to talk to the owners first and get an idea of what they need assistance with.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelors of science in Zoology from Northern Michigan University. I also have my Certified Veterinary Assistant certificate from San Juan College. I have worked in the animal field for 10 years now focusing on animal behavior and training. For my work with disabled animals I have received an international award for excellence in care and training.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I've always wanted to work with animals my whole life. After finishing school, I spent the majority of my time in the zoo field training large exotics, and also some time in the small animal veterinary field. What I learned from both fields is how much I enjoy animal training and teaching others about training. I recently wanted to move forward and take my knowledge of training, especially with disabled animals, and pass it on to the community of Grand Rapids.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Make sure who ever you chose is the right fit for you and your dog. Many dog trainers have different techniques, styles, and philosophies. Reach out and ask questions.
