My experience working with Brian and his team was tremendous. After soliciting bids from several contractors to repair and improve our backyard fence, I knew Clear Choice was the right vendor for the job. Brian's candor and transparency was critical in my selection and he didn't disappoint. The work was done to our specifications and exceeded our expectations. In fact, our neighbors saw the job they did and requested that they get to work on their fence too. Thanks so much!

Working with Advanced Roofing Solutions was a positive experience. They presented a detailed, precise description of the repair of the subdivision's fishing pier. The work was begun and completed at the agreed upon time. To make the repair even more professional, a contractor was present at the job site at all times. The result was a well built, attractive fishing pier. I will recommend that the HOA continue to use their services. I, myself, will use them for projects in my home

Bentley Parks of BP Construction was the general contractor for all work following black-in of my house. This included plumbing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, tile showers, tile flooring, hardwood flooring, and t&g ceiling. He and his selected a group of subcontractors did good to excellent work and were flexible and helpful as we worked through the many details that always come to mind of home owners as work progresses. As a new company, BP Construction needed the final payments on his very competitive bid up front to complete all contracted work. Mr. Parks kept his commitments and corrected punch list issues well after being paid in full. With us, he has earned his reputation for seeing a job through to a successful conclusion.

I honestly don't know how to summarize, how awesome a job these guys did. They are in a league above the rest for sure. They had to step in about 1/2 way through our sun room addition project because our first contractor was taking forever (7 months in on a 1 month project). They fixed issues from the first contractors sub-par job without asking me for more money. They showed up, on time, everyday they said they would. If they weren't coming one day, Keith the owner would always make sure we knew why they wouldn't be there that day (mostly because of waiting on material we ordered). They did an excellent job and their quality and attention to detail is among the best I have ever seen. My only regret is that we didn't start with them from the beginning. Their prices are fair and they will do an awesome job for you too. Hire these guys, you won't regret it.

Mike is an awesome contractor!! He and his partners are so nice and they're very honest. When we ran into some hidden issues in our laundry room and bathroom, the we're up front with us and didn't want to do a shady job and told us exactly what needed to be done to do it right and keep us from having to fix it down the road. They are VERY reasonably priced and do fantastic work. I have truly enjoyed having them in my new home and getting to meet and cut up with them all. I will definitely hire them for future projects. My mother is even going to hire them for her projects! Two thumbs up and 5 stars to Mike and his crew!!

Heath McMeans came highly recommended from a friend when I needed help. During our conversation I learned he did siding. At a loss since my contractor hadn't responded, we made plans a few weeks out. Heath soon called back to start the job early! Despite the weather trying to keep us from completion, he redid the soffit, fascia around the house, and hardie board siding on two add-on rooms. He also repaired my gate which made me the happiest! I think he did a spectacular job. My painter, who has been painting for 30+ years with builders from Michigan to Alabama also had high praise as well: said he wished everyone he'd followed up on did that kind of quality. I've already got Heath lined up for more. He's great to work with, professional, responsive, and shows up when he says he will. Quality work from someone who puts in the time to do it right the first time.

We acquired Mr. Fikes for repairs at our home we were selling. We were impressed by his skill in the construction field at such a young age. The work was completed in a timely manner and we were satisfied with the results. Mr. Fikes will become a successful contractor as he continues to grow and learn.

Daniel and his crew did an excellent job on replacing my roof. They were able to remove many layers of shingles and decking in a fast and professional manor. Service after the sale was also good. When I noticed a small problem days later, his crew came out immediately and fixed it. Competitive prices too.

We are totally pleased with Nora's service! Even more are her artistic skills..... it was pretty cool to see how she did 2 rooms. A lot of things were done in pencil, and THEN painted which was pretty cool to see because you get to see how the images kind of come to life. Our little girl wanted a sky scene in her room and there were detailed clouds everywhere.... as if you were floating around where airplanes would be. I told my uncle who had a little girl who is 2 now..... and Nora ended up doing lady bug designs. It was like Pixar had come to paint the room! Nora has mentioned that she only does this in her spare time as a hobby, but we have all told her that she is too good with art to not do this as some kind of career. You will be very pleased with her work. Ask her to show you her portfolio.... you can choose to have her paint small little drawings to frame in pictures to hang on the wall.... all the way up to designing and recreating a Disney/Pixar world on the walls as well. She also took the time to kind of sketch ideas of what you try to describe to her so she can get a better idea of what you would like her to do...only if you want her to. You could also just tell her just make it look cool with a theme, and she will draw/paint/spray stuff that you don't see anywhere. She will make it up and it just works somehow. Bottom line is our kids love it, and we sure are pleased with her service too, and you will too! Thanks Nora!

I had a large picture window with a rotted sill and casing. Donny and Tom did an excellent job of assessing the job, buying exactly the right amount of material needed, then deconstructing and precisely reconstructing the frame, casing and sill of the window. I watched the whole process and can say they are very good problem solvers and probably used to much larger jobs. You can not tell there was ever a problem-in fact I think it might look better than the original window by the time the finish work was done! The price was fair, they were personable, efficient and tidy. I would certainly recommend Birchfield Construction and will definitely call them first When I have another remodeling project!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
