Introduction: I have a masters of music in guitar performance from Illinois State University and a bachelor's in guitar performance from the University of Arizona. Why waste time with a general music teacher who spent most of his/her time in college (if indeed they actually went to college for music) studying marching band and orchestral instruments? Odds are they are only slightly more proficient than you and most likely will pass their bad technique habits on to you - resulting in a plateau of your advancement in the not-too distant future. I customize each student's lessons to his/her personal musical goals while being sure to incorporate proper technique and make sure that he/she understands what he/she is playing, not just memorizing notes or chord changes. I have a fully functional recording studio in my lesson room and can make custom materials to ensure your advancement. I enjoy watching my students become competent musicians. Several of my prior students have gone on to have successful careers. It truly is fantastic to receive a link to a new television or radio commercial or copy of a former student's new album. Being able to give someone the tools to become the person he/she always imagined himself/herself to be brings me an immense sense of contentment.

Guitar Lessons (for children or teenagers)

Brett is fantastic! Our 7 year old had his first lesson today and Brett was extremely patient, positive, and kept the momentum of a 7 year old brain going. I know Brett's methods and knowledge, and positive encouragement, will reflect on our son learning the guitar! Don't hesitate to hire Brett! Update 4/15/17: Still the best teacher ever! It's been a year now with weekly lessons and I can't say enough great things about Brett. My son thoroughly enjoys his lessons and never looks at it like a "task" that an 8 year old often would.

Guitar Lessons

I have faithfully tried learning the guitar for five months now. I have tried to learn about it on and off for a few years. I could've saved SO much time and made so much more progress by going to Mr. Lashley a long time ago! I learned more with him in 25 minutes than I learned on my own in weeks (and I'm a fast learner). He explains why your particular guitar is built the way it's built, how each component works while you're playing it and how to get the most out of each part while you're playing it. He even teaches you some of the physics of the instrument that really play a part in the way you strum! I have paid for online tutorials and taken highly recommended free ones and hadn't ever seen the spike in progress that I had in our first session. I would HIGHLY recommend this gentleman. His home is a very safe and comfortable environment and his wife is very nice as well.

Banjo Lessons (for adults)

Brett was very knowledgeable and was ready with handouts when I arrived for my first lesson. We did some exercises together and I know what I need to do for practice. I felt accomplished at the end of the lesson and understood what my next steps were. I look forward to continuing to work with him to learn how to play the banjo.

Guitar Lessons (for adults)

Brett is a great teacher. Sadly, due to my work schedule, I have been unable to take lessons from him in over a month. Thankfully, he sent me away from my last lesson with a lot of material to keep me busy and practicing. I highly recommend him. He is a great teacher, a knowledgeable fellow, and after a lesson or two, can really gauge the lessons to your playing style and ability. Cheers.....AB.

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

$30 per half an hour lesson, $40 per 45 minute lesson or $45 per hour long lesson

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Master's of Music in Guitar Performance from Illinois State University (2015), a Bachelor's of Music in Guitar Performance from the University of Arizona (2013 Magna Cum Laude), and an Associates of Fine Arts with a concentration in Music from Pima Community College (2009 Magna Cum Laude)

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I received my first guitar at the age of 8 and by the time I was a teenager, several of my friends insisted that I teach them. Later as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the Illinois State University school of music I was required to teach guitar courses, perform in the universities guitar orchestra, and conduct guitar chamber groups in exchange for a full tuition waiver.
