Children, teens, and adults really enjoy learning English or Spanish with me because my classes are lively, entertaining, and challenging. My language teaching is rooted in the TPR (Total Physical Response) method and incorporates games, music, movement, and art into the classes. For the more advanced students I use internet articles, podcasts, poetry, and short stories. Each student receives a tailor-made class. I love it when my students are completely immersed in the lesson and are sad to see it end. When I encounter former students and they not only remember me but they tell me how much they loved learning Spanish in my class, I feel so fulfilled.

Sylvia spends 1.5 hours once a week teaching my three kids Spanish. The kids are 6, 8, and 8. They're learning well and having fun. We are planning to spend a month in Costa Rica and I wanted them to have some language skills when we arrive. So far it's working great.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
When working with a new customer I like to conduct an informal assessment to gauge the student's language abilities and determine which learning style (aural, visual, verbal or physical) best suits the student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.A. in Comparative Literature from UCSB and a M.A. in Education from SFSU. I have been teaching in educational settings and tutoring individuals in English and Spanish for many years.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
Ever since I was young I've loved to work with the English and Spanish languages. I've been teaching English since I was in my twenties when I was an exchange student in Madrid and have taught private English lessons ever since. I've been teaching Spanish since the mid-80's.
