Introduction: I am a certified yoga and meditation instructor since 2003 through the Yogic Medicine Institute. I teach regular classes, as well as private clients. I am a professional belly dance performer and instructor and am certified in Phase I of Rachel Brice's 8 Elements of Bellydance. I teach regular bellydance classes as well and am exploring dance therapy. I have performed all over the West Coast and am the production manager of my own monthly show in Santa Cruz, CA. I am also the founder of Dance From Within, an annual yoga and belly dance retreat in the Santa Cruz Mountains. I also offer fire dancing -- a great way to spice up any occasion!

I am a bellydance student of Chandala Shive. My experience being Chandala’s student has enriched my life in ways I would not have imagined before. I simply signed up for a class. It was a class I had always wanted to take but was intimidated by some teachers. This is simply the opposite case with Chandala. Her style and grace serve as model of what can be in a person’s heart, while she gently encourages you to do your best. She has never judged my clumsy attempts as my personal levels of understanding my body and movement improve. She is supportive, kind, as well as an amazing performer , teacher and person. I would encourage anyone who is thinking of bring Chandala into your life as a teacher, a guide, or an instructor to do so. You will get out of it more than you can imagine, as I have. She offers me guidance in my personal journey, and that is what every teacher should do, but only very few actually do. Chandala is an amazing.

I have been learning belly dance from Chandala for about 10 months. She is an amazing dancer, knows how to break the moves down into learnable chunks, and is patient and respectful. She is easy going and personable and focuses on teaching her students the different techniques and how to put them together while ensuring that we do not get injured and have a good time. I highly recommend her. I also have been taking yoga from her for three months and am impressed by her deep knowledge of the practice. Her explainations of what we are doing and why are very interesting to me since I only discovered yoga a few years ago. She accomodates the different levels of experience in the class so that everyone benefits AND she really focuses on moving in ways that protect the body.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

    I am in constant student relationship with my yoga and meditation teachers. I take regular monthly classes and stay in contact with them about how my classes are going. I train regularly in belly dance and am currently enrolled in an in-depth certification training with Rachel Brice in Portland, Or.

    Don't be afraid to ask questions. You should feel confident that you are hiring a qualified professional.
