This was my first adventure with finding a contractor for any project, and via Thumbtack. I spoke with Mike prior to selecting him for the job, provided him with the problem I was experiencing - destroyed external outlet and cover - and he quoted me a very reasonable and fair price to solve the problem. He was very flexible with scheduling an appointment around my work and personal schedule. Mike arrived early to the house, was well-prepared, professional, and extremely thorough in the job. He also went above and beyond in checking the electrical flow of the fountain pump (determined to be non-functioning and required replacement), several other external outlets, and even took the time to check one of the light sockets in the garage, as I was concerned it was faulty - determined to be safe. In addition to the main contracted project, and all of the extra tasks, Mike was very efficient and timely. I STRONGLY recommend Mike with Powertech for all of your future electrical issues ... and I will definitely call him in the future. Thank you Mike!!See more

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

Mathews' Electric provides everything one could hope for when looking for an electrician. Harry is honest, forthright, and very knowledgeable. He suggested a better way to install our outlets that was the least disruptive to our existing walls. He's also a licensed, which was very important to us. Please don't hesitate to hire Harry. He's our trusted "electrician guy" for life.

Would not recommend for Electrical work. Messed my electrical up and ended up having to have another electrician come out to fix (which worked before he came out). Had him run power to 4-can lights and a ceiling fan which all went out and ceiling fan light ended up exploding and almost caused electrical fire in my attic.

Aaron Massella is a true pro - he knows his stuff, does quality work, takes pride in his work, and has high integrity. I have been rehabbing homes for over 12 years, and I find it hard to find a skilled tradesman with those qualities. He has now filled that empty electrician slot in my contacts lists. I highly recommend him.

I am so thrilled I met and hired Aaron thru Thumbtack! It’s such a relief to have finally met a reliable, trustworthy, fair-priced electrician that I know I will be sending business to for years to come, and for any further electrical needs I may have. Without exaggeration, Aaron was one of the most professional tradespeople I have ever hired in any category for any kind of work in our home. He was responsive in his communication from the quote process thru to scheduling, and confirming our appointment the day before. Besides being extremely knowledgeable in his trade, he had a can-do attitude and work ethic towards every one of the 6-7 projects I threw at him. He and his assistant completed all of them (about 8-10 hours worth of work between the two of them), exactly as described and charged me very fairly for work done. Finally, and although certainly not a requirement of being a good electrician, Aaron is just all-around, authentically good people! He’s the kind of guy who wasn’t just politely tolerating my very curious 3 year old son’s desire to use his toy drill to “help;” he’s the kind of guy who actually encouraged my son’s curiosity, and graciously let him tag along as his side-kick helper. Like I said: not at all a requirement of the job, but it’s always really refreshing to hire someone who’s really competent and skilled in their trade, AND is good people.

Danny reached me and arranged a time to come view my work. He was on time as promised. He gave me a reasonable bid to replace 12 outlets and three wall switches and to add 3 canned lights to my bedroom ceiling. I was nervous about giving him a check for materials however he reassured me he "was NOT that kind of internet rip-off artist". He kept his word and showed up on time to do the work the following Wednesday when I was on vacation. When I saw the canned lights a few of the cans were not flush with the ceiling and he went to Home Depot nearby to get new ones that might look better (they do). I did not give him a 5 star rating because I left him a check to finish the job since as I had to run out and he would finish before I returned. Well, while his elec skills were fine Danny left me a dirty mess to clean up -- Finger prints everywhere! And I just had my upstairs recently painted after my remodel and that cost me a load. I was just crushed to see all the dirty smears on all my new walls. So having Danny do my job made more work for me – as now I have to carry my heavy ladder upstairs to wipe off finger smudges on my newly just-painted white attic access panel. So hire Danny for your electric but be there for the entire job I guess is the lesson I learned; to make sure more work is not created for you, the home owner. I tell you the Electrician that brings his own little dustpan to clean up clipped wires left all over my floors AND brings wet wipes to keep his hands clean for a customer's expensive NEWLY painted walls will have loads of business and stellar reviews in my opinion (and clearly set himself apart for the other Electrical Professionals.
