Introduction: As a professional music educator (piano/composition/theory) for over 10 years my goal is to provide the best possible well-balanced musical education for you or your child. The program will be tailored to each student’s needs. Some students will find that the classical piano emphasis will better suit them. Others will thrive immersing themselves in the popular and beginning jazz program (chord based playing including improvisation). In fact, many students are playing their favorite songs within 6 months or less of starting lessons. No matter which emphasis a student settles into, a 3-6 month technical foundation will be included in all studies. This will enable proficient, injury-free playing in any style. My goal is to guide the student to a greater understanding and enjoyment of music. Education: I hold a BA in piano performance and composition from Santa Clara University and a MM in Composition from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Please ask me about remote Zoom and video correspondence lessons. I’m happy to setup a free 15 minute playing assessment session via Zoom so you can see how the lesson format works. ======= Dustin Callahan is proud to be an approved vendor with Inspire Charter Schools. This means that students enrolled in Inspire can use their Enrichment Certificates to take music lessons with Dustin in their home, remotely via Zoom or his studio in Escondido!

Dustin is precisely what I envisioned for myself as a senior woman, who is working on her bucket list! I came to Dustin looking for jazz and improv lessons. As a music director and teacher myself, I had quite a bit of experience but needed to take my playing ability to the next level to become a better sight reader and improviser for my clients as well as work. Dustin has taught our daughter for about four years now. She had two previous teachers, both very good but Dustin has brought her to another level entirely. She attributes this to his ability to explain things in multiple different ways, so that her understanding of music theory has greatly improved. She also says he gives her great exercises that tie back directly to the particular piece she's working on. As parents, we find him to be unfailingly calm, organized, and personable. Although he has successfully prepared our daughter for high school and college level auditions, we would wholeheartedly recommend him to any level of piano student including young children just starting out. He's outstanding.

Dustin is an amazing teacher. He always makes sure to point out the important details, such as dynamics, and the more subtle ways to add to the piano song. Dustin works with much patience to accommodate for different personalities, making sure to match their genre interests when learning a new song while mixing in some challenging ones to broaden their repertoire. Dustin focuses a lot on helping his students understand the importance of the dynamics of each song so they can bring out the beauty of each music piece. He makes sure to work on not just getting through the song, but playing it well. We really like Dustin as a piano instructor!

That my pricing is very competitive for a teacher with my experience and background. I do offer small discounts on 5/10/20 lesson packages.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Every student differs from others in aptitude, learning style, and learning speed. I’m sensitive to the student's abilities and learning style, and acknowledge that every student moves at his or her own pace.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Over 10 years working with students of all ages and backgrounds. I have a wide range of experience teaching classical, pop and beginning jazz (contemporary chord playing). As a performer I have over 20 years experience playing professionally. I hold a BA in Music from Santa Clara University along with an MM in Music Composition from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
