Mr. Soffer did an incredible job setting up my company's LLC. Not only did he complete the project on an accelerated timeline, but I felt more confident in his hands than other prospective lawyers. He provided expertise beyond setting up the LLC, including operational advice, reading material on how to stay compliant, and suggestions to help my business succeed. As the C.E.O. of my company, It is hugely valuable to have a legal counsel who will respond to emails and phone calls in a timely manner, and Mr. Soffer was consistently accessible and accommodating on tight deadlines. I strongly recommend using the Soffer Law Firm. I am thrilled with the work and looking forward to continuing the relationship for all legal matters.

I was referred to the lawyers at Pondeva & Sohrab for my divorce case from a colleague. After it was all said and done I can say they definitely exceeded my expectations - very knowledgable, always available when I needed to talk or set up an appointment. They worked hard till the very end of my case.

The Immigration Judge denied my motion to reopen of my 2010 in absentia order and relied on fairly new warnings on Form I-485, I was advised to keep USCIS updated of address changes for removal purposes. With the help of Atty. Lerner Appeal to the Board of Immigration Appeals, that decision of the Immigration Judge was reversed, finding that the his decision was in error and that I was not properly advised of his hearing and that I did not receive notice of my hearing. Thank you.

I have an extensive experience of working with different immigration attorneys not only as an immigrant, but also as an immigration specialist. I worked with multiple attorneys, few different law firms both when I had no idea how US immigration law works and later when immigration became my passion and career. Genie is one of the attorneys that I would absolutely recommend to everyone. She is knowledgeable, experienced, responsive and really responsible for your case. She will not let you fail. She is always on the client's side and acts immediately. If you want to hire a trusted attorney, Genie is a great choice. Thank you, Joanna

Thomas Scully is a brilliant attorney. He is representing me in two cases and doing a fantastic job. He's thorough, personable and a gifted writer and communicator. I shouldn't be writing this review because others are going to hire him and he'll be too busy for me - but I am compelled. Judges respect him, opposing attorneys respect him and I've had one witness tell me that if she needs an attorney, she's going to hire Thomas because he's so bright.

Mr. Martz is not like other lawyers. He is above and beyond the nicest and most down to earth lawyer I've met. Most lawyers are slow to reply, charge you a ton, and are rude. Not Kellan. He helped me with a DUI case I had a few months ago and got me a plea deal that was very fair. I made a mistake and needed help, Kellan did a great job and was very clear in explaining how everything worked in court. His prices were very competitive and he let me pay in three installments so I didn't have to come up with that much all at once. Thanks Kellan.

I would highly recommend her to friends and Family. I receive emails from her at midnight when I was sound asleep she was up working for me. Eli is the very best in the business. When you need an immigration attorney who will win your case, no matter how complex it may be, he is the man who can pull it off. I have seen it first hand. I worked with other attorneys before I hired him, and they cannot touch him in terms of his expertise and a winning attitude. I would say that he basically saved my life, when others couldn't — if you agree that the consequences of losing the fight with the powers that be can radically alter the course of your own history. Hire him to represent you, and don't look back!

Alex is the best immigration lawyer in the area (may be the us). Don't hesitate hire him! I have hired Alex for two cases. He is great at what he does. Very knowledgeable, helpful, and understands you. He also knows almost everyone at the immigration office. He worked around my work schedule and gave me a 100% attention every time I met with him. Thank you Alex. I will be hiring you again in the future.

I hired a different lawyer and asked him to be passionate about our very sensitive case and fight with everything he had. Our first day of court he didn't even show but allowed for someone to come in his place outside his firm. Mrs. Middleton showed up in his place and is everything that I requested in a lawyer and person. I wanted someone who would help fight my case with the passion that I would as if it was her herself going through it. She has given us everything she has so far and I didn't get that with the first lawyer I hired. She will give you everything she can and she doesn't tell you what you want to hear but she does listen to what you want. I thank God for her everyday and even more so when I step into court knowing I have her on my side and speaking and fighting with passion love and care. Thank you for all you have done for my family.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does an immigration attorney do?

Immigration lawyers help their clients through all phases of the immigration process. Experts on immigration law, they are legally qualified to represent U.S. citizens, permanent residents or undocumented immigrants. Immigration lawyers also provide assistance to visitors here on student, work or travel visas, and can represent clients who may have an expired visa or who have overstayed their visa.

You can hire an immigration lawyer to assist you with petitioning for renewing a permanent resident or green card, navigating the naturalization process, submitting an employee-based petition for a work visa, filing a petition for a family member, or representing you or a loved one who is facing detention or deportation, as well as replacing, extending or changing a current visa, green card or work permit. The immigration process is highly complex, with multiple hearings, paperwork and requirements. Hiring a legal expert to represent you can help you make your best effort in the process. When researching immigration lawyers, it is very important to verify their qualifications and find a reputable attorney. Read reviews and verify that the immigration lawyer is licensed by your state before paying any fees.

How do you find a good immigration lawyer?

Research is key to finding a good immigration lawyer. The immigration process can be overwhelming and complex, so a trustworthy advocate is critical. When you have identified several eligible candidates, verify their immigration law license to protect yourself and your finances. Once you have a set of licensed immigration lawyers in mind, choose one based on these considerations:

      • Mutual respect: You want an immigration lawyer who treats you and your family with kindness and consideration. You’ll do the same for them.
      • Availability: Before hiring, note if they have responded promptly to your emails and calls. You don’t want to hire someone you have to chase around.
      • Proven success: Read former client reviews and research their success rate with cases similar to yours.
      • Transparent rates: Ask directly about what their rates are, how they bill, and what they estimate your legal fees will be. Ask if they will sign a fee agreement, and get receipts for all fees paid.
      • Verify who will handle your case: Sometimes junior lawyers work on firm cases. This is okay, as long as you have discussed it and are comfortable with it. When junior lawyers or paralegals are working on your case, ask if the hourly rate is lower.
      • Be wary of anyone who promises you specific results: No case is certain, and the immigration lawyer should be honest about what you can expect.

How much does an immigration lawyer cost?

Immigration lawyers are experts in the nuances of the highly complex United States immigration system. They help clients of all backgrounds petition for immigration status and become U.S. citizens, and can represent clients who are facing deportation or detention. Nationally, the cost people pay for immigration lawyers averages $500-$1,010. The services you need will have a huge effect on your costs. For routines cases, such as applying for a travel visa, an immigration lawyer may be able to confidently quote you a set price, while more open-ended cases may be billed at an hourly rate of $200-$500, or more, depending on the reputation and experience of the firm and lawyer. Before hiring an immigration lawyer, ask what their plan for your case is and what expected costs may be. Many immigration lawyers work from retainers, and request a set amount of money upfront from which to work. For example, a lawyer who charges $300 per hour may estimate $4,000 for a standard family-based immigration case, the common process in which a U.S. citizen petitions for permanent residency for their spouse, fiancee or family members.
