Excellent service. We needed our thermostat fixed. He came out today, Saturday and now we have heat :-) I also had him install another fixture and haul away the old one and he did. I will definitely hold on to his contact info., and recommend him to anyone who needs a qualified electrician. Well done!

Aire rite came to our home for only $20 (on a Sunday) and after inspecting our water heater throughly (we had no hot water) determined that we needed a new gas valve. Our technician (David) gave us all our options and even worked with us on the price. The company did not have the part in stock but they put a rush order on it and they were back in our home installing the new part on Tuesday morning. We are 100% satisfied with their service. Very friendly, professional and reasonably priced. We would DEFINITELY use them again if needed and would also recommend them to anyone in need.

My furnace has been acting up lately. It's a Trane xe80. Joel was at my house (long beach) with in 30 minutes of my initial call. Joel was very knowledgeable about my heat unit and very professional. As my usual luck prevails we could not reproduce the problem it was having the night before. Joel told me to call him when it starts acting up again and we will go from there. I'm happy that he didn't just make something up and bill me a few hundred bucks for a useless part. He told me there's no charge for the diagnostic stuff we did today. Now I'm waiting for the unit to start acting up again, and I'll call Joel.

I wish all contractors were as responsive as Air-O-Stat. I had a small flood that blew out two furnaces. When I called that sent a tech out the next day and gave me a specific time for the appointment (rather than the normal some time between 12 and 5) and he was on time! They fully explained what was wrong and went to get replacement circuit boars and installed them immediately. I was a difficult issue to deal with since all the functioning parts of the furnaces had been under water but the fixed it quickly and were a delight to deal with. Will definitely use them exclusively in the future.

Thank you to Prestigious/Independent Heat & Air for the excellent service. We have been trying to find a reliable business to service our AC Air/Heating Unit at our office. For some reason, these guys are hard to find... Thankfully, we were referred to Prestigious/Independent Heat & Air. Jason came for the first service and was thorough, polite, neat, and professional. It was refreshing to work with someone like Jason. We will be using these guys again for multiple locations and happy to refer them on to friends and family... Thank you again!!

I recently purchased my Nest thermostat from and was very enthusiastic about setting it up so that I could have some remote control ability of my heating/cooling system. When I opened the box and read the instructions, it wasn't as easy as it initially seemed (apparently my system was recommended for a pro install per the Nest instructions). Not wanting to damage my system and Nest thermostat, I called Beach Cities Mechanical office and spoke with their helpful phone technician about my situation and told them that I needed someone to install it for me. I was told about how long it would take to install, about their past experience with Nest installs (both simple and complex) and was told that they would have next day availability to come out to my house. I spoke with Travis Knight (I presume one of the owners) about my situation. He was very understanding of me, reassured me of his own personal experience with installation of Nest thermostats and gave me the confidence that his company knew what they were doing. Now, after all is said and done, I have my Nest thermostat up and running without problems. It took very little time for it to be installed and its function verified! I am very pleased with their services and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for competent, friendly and reassuring technicians. Tim

Vern came out on a Sunday and did not charge me extra. He tested my A/C , replacing part and repaired within 30 minutes. He checked my heating and replaced filter for no charge. He is the last of the breed who really cares about service. He even showed me pictures of his granddaughter. Do yourself a favor and call the man.

Laith was very responsive. He came out on Sunday morning in the middle of the recent heat wave. He got my A/C up running while he ordered parts and only charged for the service call which he later credited to my invoice after returning and making the final repairs. Will call again if needed and recommend.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
