About
My teaching principles are based on outlining the advantageous mental and physical practice techniques revealed through research in Sports Psychology. These methods help my students strategically overcome the numerous psychological obstacles in order to develop a consistently high level of performance. High-level performance under pressure is the common goal among many students, and I apply my teaching methods to develop and increase control of muscular and mental functions, accuracy, precision, discipline, mental awareness and overall coordination in violin performance. I share with students my Sports Psychology research that focuses on common triggers for performance anxiety, stage fright and other psychological barriers that negatively impact high-pressured performances. By assessing the students’ performances, I design an applicable daily practice plan which gears to establish better control over the physical and psychological symptoms known to negatively impact performance. By incorporating knowledge of Sports Psychology in my lessons, I hope to educate about the existing relationship between mental process and physical execution and the impact one has on the other, while maintaining integrity of the repertoire. For professional athletes and musicians, performing under pressure is an inescapable element of their careers. Given the current levels of performance excellence and the consequent fierceness of competition, consistency in performance quality is indispensable in attaining the degree of professionalism. This implied link between musical and athletic disciplines is a logical one. Similarly to athletes, musicians must achieve high levels of technical skill, efficient movement patterns, acute focus, composure and extreme concentration, all while maintaining a consistently high level of performance. Musicians ‘play’ music as athletes ‘play’ sports. Therefore, like sports, a musical performance is a physical activity with extreme demands on technical facility, training ethics, discipline, deliberate practice, structure, dedication, determination, motivation and inspiration. Like sports, it is a form of self-expression, performed in front of an audience and demanding astounding mastery of the human mind and body. Both performance practices provide the performer with opportunities for excellence, though the journey may bring forth intense pressures, challenges, anxieties, fears and psychological phobias. Adapting the methods and principles developed by research in sports psychology, affords tremendous advantage in a musician’s constant desire to elevate, not only the quality, but also the consistency of quality in their performance. The success of this approach is evident in my students’ positive attitude towards practice, their audition success in winning positions, acceptance into festivals, music programs and performance achievements.

To me, Dimitry is a great teacher. Though I learnt violin with him for only a few month (personal reason I have to stop for now), my progress was obvious. He pointed out and corrected the mistakes in my gesture/habits that I kept for years. He knew my status and could always offer advices and suitable practice method whenever problems occurred. His encouragement was not like pampering kids, but I could certainly feel it and via it gained further confidence in attacking new challenging (to me) piece. The experience is similar to a tour guide, or rather an experienced companion, to me during hiking. I also appreciate his analogy between the violin skills and other sports activities in daily life to enhance my understanding in the former, which I would perhaps remember for a long time. For my age and occupation, studying violin is to enjoy life and to purify my spiritual world, and I think he helped me achieve it at some level.

Dimitry is awesome! I just started classes with him and he is an extremely knowledgable teacher. He pays attention to detail and always corrects my mistakes, big or small, which is exactly what I wanted. As he said in my first class, it's better in the beginning that you don't develop bad habits that are difficult to break later on. As an adult beginner of violin, I was apprehensive about starting, however, I am progressing much faster than I imagined I would. Dimitry is passionate about the violin and music in general. If I had any complaint, it's that it feels as though he's going too fast for me sometimes. But he pushes me outside my comfort zone and is very encouraging. Last class he told me not to be afraid of making a bad note. I look forward to further study with Dimitry.

My 12 year old son has been taking violin for 3 years and has had several instructors. He wasn't improving at all until Dimitry Olevsky became his teacher. Dimitry is incomparable to all the other instructors that my son has had. He is not only an extremely accomplished violinist, but he has the innate ability to mentally relate to his student, is extremely determined for his students to consistently improve, and is genuinely kind...all qualities of a great teacher. With Dimitry, in 6 months my son went from playing simple songs to playing complex pieces. When a student improves, he is motivated to go further. This credit is given to Dimitry. He is an EXCELLENT instructor, and my son is fortunate to be his student.

As an active musician and relatively recent doctoral graduate, Dimitry provides a fresh perspective on how to approach the violin. Often times, Dimitry shapes tackling difficult passages like practicing a sport: break down each step with as much precision and focus as possible. Then, put it together.
