Introduction: Hi! I'm Katie, and I look forward to celebrating and accommodating your individuality through the practice of yoga.
I trained to be a yoga teacher at ISHTA Yoga in NYC with Alan Finger, where I learned to teach individual's physical, energetic and emotional needs. With me, yoga is not a "one size fits all!" I will teach yoga to you in a way that is best for you on that day, at that time and in that moment so that you walk out of our sessions feeling balanced and refreshed.
The following are the nuts and bolts of what I teach:
- Asana (physical postures) -- practiced with the intention of strengthening muscles that are weak and stretching muscles that are tight in order to remove blockages from both the physical and energetic body
- Pranayama (breathing techniques) -- I'll guide you to become more conscious of your breath and potentially alter the flow/pattern of breath in order to change how you feel. We can alter our breath to bring ourselves into a more balanced state (i.e., if anxious, we will practice breathing techniques that calm; if lethargic, techniques to energize and uplift).
- Meditation -- The definition of meditation that I use is "one-pointed focus." Focusing the mind on one activity or object in order to eventually experience mental quietude -- an experience yogis call "samadhi." It is a feeling of complete oneness -- like being in a state of deep sleep except you are awake to experience it. This was traditionally the ultimate goal of yoga!
- Philosophy -- If you are interested, I am happy to share some of the philosophical ideas behind yoga with you!
- Bodywork -- I have studied marma therapy, rolfing and myofascial release approaches with Richard Baronio, an experienced bodyworker. You will feel so completely relaxed and blissed out after this work; you may even forget your own name!
My private clients have included a nurse in her 60s, a librarian in her 30s, a therapist in her 60s, a kindergarten teacher in her 30s, a social justice worker in her 20s, a six-year-old girl and her mom and aunt (family yoga!), a contractor/sculptor in his 70s, a 20-year-old battling breast cancer, a 60-year-old battling breast cancer and a 20-year-old battling lymphoma. I have taught yoga in people's living rooms, in offices, performance spaces, rehearsal studios, on top of a mountain, in parks, yoga studios and gyms. This practice is truly for anyone and can be practiced anywhere!
In addition to being a registered yoga teacher at the 500-hour level, I hold specialty certifications to teach restorative yoga/yoga nidra and yoga for women living with cancer. Clients and fellow teachers have described my teaching as thoughtful, creative, inspiring and relaxing.
Please feel free to send me a message if you have any questions for me, or check out my website to learn more. I can't wait to share this amazing practice with you!
