What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
It's important to get to know the learning style of each client as well as any previous athletic experience before hitting the water. We try to use any current skills and knowledge you're carrying under your belt to help you translate the new info into something you can understand and apply.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
- B.A. in Communications with emphasis in Business/Non-Profits from Cal State University Channel Islands. Graduated Magna Cum Laude with program honors.
- Nearly 10 years of training in Special Education within the public school system
- 25+ years surfing, competitively and otherwise
Do you have a standard pricing system for your service? If so, please share the details here.
Our pricing varies depending on the ability and experience of each client, as well as if one has equipment or if it needs to be provided. Those with little to know experience or who still need assistance with catching waves (need a push) are considered beginners and will be given the beginner rate. The no equipment rate is less; however, do not assume that the board in your friend's garage is suitable for you. We aim at making each session super successful, which is determined largely on having the proper equipment. Those who have had some water time and who are looking to improve on their current skills receive a reduced rate because less physical work is required of the instructor.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I've always had a knack for teaching. While in school with the goal of obtaining a teaching credential, I realized that my side job of teaching others the joy of surfing was far more lucrative and way less stressful than having to be in charge of 30+ school-aged children. It turned out to be a very smart decision!
What types of customers have you worked with?
We focus mainly on private, one-on-one or small group instruction, which allows for a more intimate learning experience. Our coaches are dedicated to seeing that you have the most successful session possible. TSI is committed to providing quality instruction to all ages, genders, and abilities, with instructors who will customize their approach based on your needs.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Learning to surf is not easy and can be very frustrating; however, finding the right instructor can make all the difference. When selecting a surf program, be sure your instructors can actually surf and that they are willing to share their knowledge with you so that you can progress to the next level. Often times, instructors intentionally try to keep you at the beginner level so that you need to keep purchasing lessons.
What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
There are all sorts of people out there claiming to be surf instructors. Some are good surfers, some are not. While your instructor doesn't necessarily have to be equivalent to Kelly Slater, he or she should be proficient at the sport. On the same token, not everybody has the ability to teach. What makes TSI stand out above the rest is the fact that we are not only great surfers, we are amazing teachers!
