Hired on Thumbtack

Hired on Thumbtack

I contacted Nor Cal stone works to put a countertop in my home, I wanted him to come over to give me a bid. He gave me a real low price that was about 450 below another contractor. There is a old saying "beware of what you pay for". I wanted him to take a look at the project plus I wanted a contract. He said he would be over at 6pm on 12/7/17 I sent him my address and telephone number. He never showed up or called. I sent him a text of how much I appreciated him coming over. He sent me a text that he was doing a job in Jackson and he had no cell service. He said he would come over at 7pm on the 8th and once again he never showed up or even bothered to call. I texted him again, and he said he would be here at 8:30pm okay right, fool me twice, I'm stupid go ahead and fool me again. So I told him to kick rocks. This guy will give you a real low bid, but what good does it do to get a real low bid if the contractor doesn't show up, or he isn't professional enough to even call. He bid my job at 800 dollars, another contractor bid it at 1345.00, and he even gave me a written proposal. what good does a low bid do, if you can't get a proposal and the contractor doesn't show up, and doesn't have enough courtesy to call when he isn't going to show up. if you decide to use him for a job I really hope you have better luck then I did. Always remember "you get what you pay for".

Do not hire Sam. He was prompt and communicative at first and then it would take 3-4 days to get a response from him. He was supposed to be at my house this morning at 8:00 am to install prefab quartz counters. Yesterday I had a question about installation and I texted him at 8:00 am. He never replied. This morning he was still not at my house by 8, so my fiance called him. He said he still had to go pick up the materials and he would be at my house at 9 am. 9 am rolls around and he still wasn't at my house, so we called him again. He said he was on his way to pick up the materials but that he would rather not install them today because of the rain and he would rather install them tomorrow. This wasn't ok with me because #1, it wasn't raining where we live nor was rain in the forecast and #2, my fiance and I had both already taken time off work today to be here for the install, made other arrangements for our baby so she wouldn't be here during all the noise, and had a plumber scheduled to come in the evening in install the new faucet and garbage disposal. He said ok, he would be here in an hour, hour and a half. By 11:15 am he still was not at my house. My fiance called him twice to see where he was and he didn't answer. I called the quartz supplier to see if our materials had been picked up yet and they told me no. By this point I was done with him, so I told the quartz supplier not to release the materials to him and I would drive there and cancel the order and hire someone else. My fiance called him and left a message firing him and I sent him a text message saying the same because I wanted as much of a paper trail as I could get. His response to me was "It's up to you guys I said I'll finish today it means I'll finish you wanna go with another guy that's your choice I am sorry for any inconvenience." I said "I stayed home from work to go in late after you got here, so I can't just wait around. You said you would be here by 10/10:30 and now it's 11:15." But really the agreed upon time was 8 am. I was supposed to be at work by 9/9:30 so I could explain a few things and get some final details hashed out at 8 am before they started, and I ended up having to take an entire day off work to deal with this. He didn't respect my time in the least, or my fiances, or the fact that my infant's care and routine was rearranged so that he could come when he said he would come. This is unacceptable. Add to all of this the fact that he didn't offer a contract. I had to ask him for a contract, and he said he would give us one and never did, so we wrote our own for him to sign, but he never did since he never came. This is my fault for not asking for one up front, but I still think it's unprofessional of him not to offer and have it ready at the beginning. Also, I looked him/his business Nor-Cal Stone Works on the California State Contractor's Board website and found that the license associated with this business is expired. It expired 1/31/2018. The name associated with the license is Sargis Sargsyan. He does have active, bonded licenses associated with other companies in the Rancho Cordova area, but the license for Nor-Cal Stone Works, which is the company he lists as his on Thumbtack, is expired. I have no idea what license # and bonding information he would have put on the contract had he ever signed it, but I suspect it would've been one of the licenses associated with the other companies, and I'm not even sure if he can legally do work under those licenses while using Nor-Cal Stone Works as the company on record. I've attached photos to this review. One is a screenshot from the CA State Contractor's Board website showing his Nor-Cal Stone Works license is expired and the other is from the Nor-Cal Stone Works Facebook page showing the license number. Lastly, there was a review of his work on Thumbtack written by a woman named Sona A. and I found her on Facebook and she seems to be married to his business partner who came to my house with him for the initial estimate and I'm pretty sure they are all relatives somehow. Her review was not verified by Thumbtack and now it appears to have been deleted. Sam quoted me $800 labor to demo and install 40 square feet of prefab quartz. This is super cheap. But as another reviewer stated, you get what you pay for. We are now happily paying $550 more to a different installer who gave us a contract up front and who we feel infinitely more comfortable with. His license expiration alone is reason enough to not hire him, and I'm glad I chose to go with someone else now after having found this information. Thumbtack should review contractors' licenses before allowing them to use this service.
