Clifford has been providing lessons for the past few months to my 5-year old son and 8-year old daughter. Clifford is always very reliable at showing up to lessons, and letting us know in advance if he needs to reschedule. Despite my son’s hyperactivity and my daughter’s difficulty overcoming mistakes and frustrations, Clifford always remains patient. He uses a wonderful balance of firmness and encouragement that keeps them engaged and moving forward. They have both come a long way in a fairly short period of time. I am highly impressed by his talents both as a musician and as a teacher.

I can't say enough about how happy we were hiring Rob & his band The Gold Standard for our wedding in SF. They were AMAZING. He was the best thing about our wedding. The next day everyone from our friends, to our parents, and us too, were raving about how great the music was. He kept everyone dancing the entire time - even during dinner people were hitting the floor prematurely. They started playing as the guests were entering the reception venue - and when I peeked in to check them out before we entered the room - I was floored with how great they sounded! Rob was playing some electronic music with sax, flute, and there was a drummer, and a singer - Conn Curran (who was FANTASTIC). And then they played our first dance song - again, with Conn singing. It was perfect. I come from a family of musicians and they were all impressed and loved the evolution of music throughout the night. from the more Sinatra style dinner music, a bunch a great 90s stuff that appealed to our early 30s crowd, ending with more contemporary music by the end of the night. My husband and I were pretty busy preparing for the wedding beforehand so didn't give a ton of guidance on music - but we did fill out a questionnaire that Rob provided, which was great. It ended up working out perfectly, and I would recommend him a million times over to anyone getting married or throwing a party. He is professional AND talented.10 stars!!

Jeffrey is a superior piano teacher and pianist. I'm a full-time music teacher in the Bay Area, with over 25 years of experience. I'm also the founding director of a popular after-school music program, so I've hired many music teachers over the years. Jeffrey is by far my favorite! I have recommended Jeffrey to a number of my students and they have all excelled at a rapid pace under his musical guidance. Jeffrey has high standards and expectations for his students and at the same time is gentle and patient with them. He has a systematic approach to music reading, harmony, improvisation and composition which has proven to be most effective with all his students. He knows hundreds and hundreds of songs and can play in any style including classical, rock, pop, Latin and his specialty, jazz. You're musical life will be transformed in a most positive way if you have the privilege of studying with this master teacher. Highly recommended for both children and adults.

I'm a beginner to guitar, having played a little piano and drums before. Been working with Chris for a few weeks now and it has been a blast. He's a talented musician who is connected to the music scene. I wanted a guitar teacher who was connected to the local music scene, and so I've really enjoyed working with Chris and even going to see his band perform. I also love how Chris walks through songs and is able to write out the tabs and chords on the fly, and then on top of that show me multiple ways of playing the same song. Highly recommend.

I am a bass player who has always played guitar here and there but nothing too serious, and about a year ago decided I really want to know the fundשmentals of guitar. A friend recommended Jacob Light, whom I've heard play before in local bands, and I decided to take the chance. I wasn't dissapointed to say the least. Jacob is a really down to earth guy who immediately understood my musical style and focused mainly on what I wanted to know, unlike other teachers I've had experience with. Even so, he knew what subjects to insist I learn, like improvisation. and scales. all this was done in a friendly, calm, cool yet persistent atmosphere which is just the right blend for learning, in my opinion.Soon enough I started feeling I really understand guitar, and this new kno'ledge even helped me with my bass guitar playing. Ive been taking guitar lessons with Jacon for 6 months and the only downdise I can think of is the fact he moved to California, otherwise I would have still take lessons from him, without a doubt.

I worked with Michael Lu to hire a string quartet for my corporate event. Michael and the musicians were outstanding. They arrived on time and looked very professional. They were easy to work with, were quick to communicate when needed and their quality of music more than exceeded our expectations. I would highly recommend Michael Lu to anyone looking for corporate or event musical entertainment, and I will certainly hire them again in the future.

I hired Orkestra International for my engagement party in Concord, Ca. My step-dad is Mexican American and we have a lot of parties and dancing. My fiancé (who's also Mexican American) and I decided to have our engagement party with salsa dancing along with other dance music for our friends and family that would be attending. We wanted someone affordable and knew a vast array of different genres in English and Spanish. With only a couple weeks to plan, I went searching online and found Orkestra International. I was surprised with their setup. A DJ band that didn't have instruments but back tracks. They also did Spanish songs as well as other dance music. I was a little skeptical, but called them up and spoke to their band leader, Barbara Ochoa. She was really informative. I explained to her that I was having a small(ish) party in my backyard for an engagement party on October 14th. I also explained what kind of set list we wanted as well. She was really understanding and said her band was available that day (thank goodness). We talked about the price and she was really reasonable. Her price was less than some DJs I had looked at before finding her. Anyways, fast forward to the 14th. Her band arrived early to set up. By band, I mean the trio. They had a back track dj board thing, mics and speakers. Again, I was a little skeptical, at least I was, until they started. THEY WERE GREAT! They knew A LOT of different Latin style songs that kept my family and friends dancing and happy on my step-dad's and fiancé's (mine too) side, and for us on my family's (and friends) side knew a bunch of classic American standards that got them moving too. I forgot that they didn't have a real band behind them. Thank you for making my engagement such a wonderful memory! I'll probably be hiring them again for my wedding reception.

As wedding and event planners, it is crucial to find bands that set the perfect tone for the event. Los Boleros was fabulous. For this wedding, they created an atmosphere that got the guests up from their chairs, dancing all night long. The entire process; from booking through perfmance was professional and exactly what we hoped for. I would strongly recommend working with Rudy and this band. It was a great experience all around....not to mention that the band is just AMAZING!

Martan has been doing a wonderful job teaching my teenage son jazz piano for the past few years. Martan has a proven approach starting at the basics and advancing to very sophisticated techniques at a pace the student can handle. The techniques my son is learning are also directly applicable to playing jazz on other instruments such as the saxophone that my son also plays in his school band.

Larry's a great guy and great drum instructor. We always have a blast during my lesson and he's taught me quite a bit over the last year or so that I've been taking lessons from him. He plays in many local bands and different types of music so it doesn't really matter what you want to learn on the drums, Larry will be able to teach you.

Ralph is a remarkably intuitive and efficient one man studio to record with. Being a world class guitarist and teacher doesn't hurt. Also having played in excellent bands for so long gives him range. I recently did a recording with him that was a rush job of sorts with lots of fixes and he was amazing. He can actually tailor whatever recording project to the wants and needs of the artist. In short: He gets it. He works really hard, puts the project first and is more than fair to say the least in what he charges. I give him the highest of recommendations. You won't regret working with him. Ps. He is calm and friendly as well. He puts the client at ease knowing we're in safe hands.

Natalie has been fantastic to work with! Her instruction through exercises, general tips/suggestions, and specific ideas when working on a particular song has all been stellar and on point throughout my work with her. I feel like I have improved dramatically over the course of our lessons, and my band members have made several comments about my improvement as well. She has an uncanny knack for knowing what I am doing with my breath, diaphragm, throat, mouth, etc., and being able to suggest just the right adjustments to make things sound better and more comfortable to sing. Natalie is a wonderful person, too, very encouraging, supportive, and respectful. I highly, highly recommend her!!

The GTS Band has been my favorite for years, so I was thrilled when I was asked to contract with them for a high school reunion. Rick was great and easy to work with. We placed the band centrally in the room to give the lead singer an opportunity to work the room as he performed--which he does so well. As always, the music was fantastic!

Isaac and the Haze is a fantastic dance band! They were really the perfect entertainment for last two parties of about 60 people each. We hired them because some of our co-workers had heard them play at the Crow's Nest in Santa Cruz. The guys arrived about an hour early to set up their sound equipment and were ready to play right on time. Isaac, the lead singer, plays a keytar and electric cello. He has a great voice, with a big range of emotion, and really engaged the audience in between songs. The lead and back-up vocals were great and consistently held up against the big beat of the band. Other band members played lead guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard. I was worried that their 5-member band would overpower the relatively small venue, but the sound levels were perfect, and they didn’t blast us to the back of the room. There were 20 or more people dancing all the time, including young kids and a grandma in her 90's. We really liked the numbers they performed, which were mostly covers of R&B music from the 2000's, like Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic, DNCE’s Cake By The Ocean, Maroon 5’s Moves Like Jaggar, and works by Justin Timberlake. You could tell the band members were all having a good time too and enjoyed what they were doing. Great music! Great entertainment!

    Abbot Studio

    New To Thumbtack

      About

I'm a rock/jazz drummer with experience working out songs, building bands, and organizing live sets. I usually work with a guitarist and bassist, and I'm used to improvising new drum parts to go along with their riffs and solos. I'm less about crazy chops and drum solos, and more about just delivering a great, steady beat. I also manage a small practice space, Abbot Studio. Our recording equipment isn't great, but it's enough for a proof of concept, and I have a good relationship with a more professional recording studio, ShatteredRecords. I'm located in Dale City, CA.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
