I asked him to come out and fix a furnace and explained to him what was wrong He told me to have the last contractor come back and fix the situation that they did not do correctly and saved me the money for him to come out and do the work

Talked to several companies about rodent-proofing (possible removal) and cleaning. Shlomi at ESI was the most professional and informative of those I spoke with and compared to other companies, his seems to be much more thorough and willing to answer a lot of questions. He was very prompt and responsive, showed up on time (they gave me a 2 hour window, but he called to tell me when he'd arrive), did some work after the initial inspection and then returned to complete the job. Unlike other companies (offering rodent services), ESI includes the follow ups in the initial cost so they'll return a few times to make sure the job was done right and that no other entry points remain. I'd recommend ESI and Shlomi for such work as well as furnace maintenance and duct cleaning as well - great team and even better service!

Hired Smart HVAC for furnace blowing cold air. Bajji responded immediately (it was 10pm) and came the next morning punctually at 9pm. Thorough diagnosis (bad wire connection and bad temperature sensor), reasonably priced repair. Would hire again. Very good.

One of the first things Gleo told me was that he had a regular job and would be able to work on weekends. He did two jobs for me at a rental. One was installing a medicine cabinet and interior lock. He did not complete repair of drywall repair by the cabinet. The other job was installation of a security door. He installed the medicine cabinet, lock and security door in a good manner. He did not complete an addition to the bottom of the security door. He was pleasant, on time, cleaned up well, and cooperative but for the incomplete items. I wanted him to paint a bath in S.F. at another rental but, he did not give me an estimate (perhaps too far away). Manelis Properties

Max provided an amazing service. Everything about his was professional, friendly, capable and service oriented. His charge was extremely reasonable for the work he did. Not only did he effectively fix my furnace, he also did a great job as a plumber. I really appreciate that he made it a fixed price job - so I knew exactly how much my charge was going to be, and everything was completely transparent. There were several cases where he could have charged me more, or suggested a higher priced service, but he didn't. Max was outstanding both in his capability and service level. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone!

Ahhhh I had the OLDEST furnace known to man and nobody would help me fix the gas line! Smart Air was the only company to even bother taking a look and wouldn't leave until the job was done. They took two days to fix my furnace because they had to drive all over town to find old parts. I would hire them again in a heartbeat... Jedi knows his stuff!

We hired Anthony a month ago for install new heating and cooling service in our home which also required to install vents. Anthony and his team did very clean job installing furnace on attic and as well as vents on ceiling without making any damage to the ceiling. As it was so cold last month Anthony had sense of emergency and he with his team worked till late eve and finished the work in just 4 days for us. He is not just good professionally but personally too, he understood our situation and helped us with his big van just on personal values without expecting any benefits from us.

Alex advised us about the cost of repair to our 11 year old dryer and what the overall condition of our dryer was. By his fair advisement we decided to repair rather than to buy a new one. His repair did solve the issue we were having. He also at no extra cost did a quick overall check on our washer which we appreciated.

Denny was great! He provided a fair install price and delivered an exceptional install. He also identified and fixed several issues regarding my furnace install by another company. He was very responsive and respectful of our house during the install. I would highly recommend his services to everyone. I plan to use his services for all my future HVAC needs.

Professionally and well executed thru entire process. I got five estimates. A1 was upper middle, but my experience and value of their deliverables justified the price. I would definitely refer them to anyone. FYI my installers were Oscar and William ( very professional/respectful/meticulous), Sales - Jerry, & Brad (COO?). Christina on the phone was helpful as well. They have a good team. Summary of work done: Replaced 48 year old furnace in garage closet shared with water heater. Replaced old ducting. Installed new Trane XV80, 2 stg, 100K BTU, ducting, bubble wrap insulation. Took away all old stuff. $5500 (incl taxes, inspection...). I probably got some discount. All five bids ... lowest 2800$, Highest 7200$, middle were 5000-5500. Great job guys!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

      • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
      • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
      • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
      • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
      • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
      • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
      • Cleaning and oiling the blower
      • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
      • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
      • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

      • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
        • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
      • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
      • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
      • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
