FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I grew up wanting to get my family's approval. I am a first generation Iranian-American who grew up here with a very traditional father. I grew up having ADD, and a very strict upbringing not allowing me to do anything outside of studying. Not liking to study, and having difficulty fitting in with friends I managed as much as I could to get into UCLA as a pre-dental student, and a psychology major. My family wanted me to be a medical doctor, and to get married via arranged marriage. The only other profession that was acceptable for me was dentistry but I was to live at home until I got into dental school. I did not enjoy dentistry, and although I did everything I could, take the required classes, study & take the DAT test, do the internship, I secretly wanted to be a psychotherapist. So I took additional classes, and I also had created a secret life of my own to allow myself to spiritual survive. When my father found out I had a boyfriend that I was hiding for 4 years at the age 25, and decided to disown me, I realized that all the years of pain I was going through of having to please, and going against what I wanted was meaningless, and I was still completely rejected. I went through an existential crisis, and struggled to find meaning in my life to continue. At that time I had found out I got into dental school, thinking about it made me realize that if I were to go forward on that path, I would lose myself completely. So, I quickly applied to CSUN for the Marriage and Family Therapy program, said no to dental school and went towards my passion without looking back. I got into the program to heal myself, and in return to help people going through identity issues/existential crisis, and/or are feeling lost, depressed to gain a strong sense of self, set healthy boundaries, to find their purpose in life, and pursue it successfully! I feel very happy, successful and fulfilled, now having a positive relationship with family, but on my terms. :) Mahastee Mehdizadeh, MFT., CHt.
