- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Unlike medical doctors and dentists, not all therapists are trained to do things the same way. In fact, therapists dont even hold the same kinds of licenses or college degrees! Within the mental health field, there is no standardized method of therapy nor mandated treatment for any kind of problem. Different types of therapists do different types of therapy based on different types of theories. Honestly, its a bit of a free-for-all. But thats okay. Decades of scientific research have shown that its not the particular therapist nor the particular treatment method that accounts for success in therapy. What makes therapy work is the positive relationship between a client and a therapist. Knowing this, I feel it is vital that you find a therapist you feel comfortable withsomeone you like and who seems to get where youre coming from. You need to feel heard and understood. And if you dont, you need to keep shopping around until you find a therapist that feels like a good match.
