I wanted to fix a broken bedroom door, and I am glad to pick David Gomes as my handyman. Seeing the number of positive reviews he has, I decided to call him on the phone to describe the problem with my door. He clarified which pieces had to be replaced, what I'd be buying at Home Depot, how much the parts would cost, and how much his labor would cost. He was very clear in his explanation, and it was obvious that he has a lot of experience in this field. After talking to him on the phone, I later asked if he'd be willing to install a bathroom door in my master room, and he gave a very fair price for both jobs. We met at Home Depot during the morning, and he quickly identified which parts I needed to buy for my 2 jobs. At my house, he skillfully installed the 2 doors I needed, ensured that they closed perfectly, seamlessly matched the old existing moulding with the new door's moulding, and I have two brand new doors now. When I asked him if there was any way he could make one of the doors quieter, he found the adhesive strips necessary for dampening the door when it was slammed. After those two jobs were done, I really liked the way my doors turned out, so I pulled out my list of home improvements while he was still around. I had him change a toilet, paint the doors he installed, fix a broken shower door handle, etc. I just asked him how much extra he would charge for each additional job I asked, and I was convinced that his rates are very good. There are a lot of people who know how to do things, but very few can perform to the detail that you would like, with the work that lasts for years to come. It's important to find the right person who knows what he's doing, and David Gomes is a plumber, electrician, and the everything-handyman whom I'll always have in my contacts for whatever problems arise with my house. I recommended him to all my friends & family who have houses, as they'll appreciate the excellent work he does for the great prices he charges. If you find someone who claims to be able to do something for much cheaper than what David Gomes is charging, you'll probably end up regretting it later.

Ricardo methodically replaced all the parts in the tank to try and figure out the problem. In the end, determined it was the toilet itself. Did a great job. He was generous enough to try and not take money for labor but it was worth paying for all the effort. He was also happy to come in, despite the heavy rain.

Darin is simply a great asset. He is respectful of the customer. What I mean is - he is punctual - arrived right on time. As far as workmanship itself he is efficient and knows his stuff. I got can lights installed. He also is not afraid to get feedback - there was a moment when I as a lay person suggested something and he not only accepted it as a good suggestion but said so. Not too many pros appreciate that or are open to such feedback and I think he exemplifies all the qualities one would like to see in a great skilled worker. Thank you Darin.

Vyron showed up when promised and picked up all of the scrap metal I had after removing a flue and fireplace. He left the area clean and spotless. Vyron was polite, quick, and very reasonable. I would definitely hire him again for my next job. Many thanks.

Mr. Hartwell demonstrated explicit knowledge and understanding of his ability to perform the job at hand. Not only did he demonstrated his ability in his work, he also demonstrated his ability to explain in explicit details the different alternatives there were in solving the problem. From the end results as well as the cost in material and labor for each method "prior to performing any work or committing to any method. His work rivals that of many contractors charging twice as much per hour. I would recommend him to anyone needing door work done.

Needed a garbage disposal replaced for my tenant. All questions were answered in a timely fashion within the Thumbtack app. Once the garbage disposal installation began, he discovered that a certain piece was not fitting correctly. He kept me updated with what needed to be done and if there were going to be any additional costs. Provided the store receipts for materials along with an invoice for labor to my email. Would definitely work with again!

Dan is awesome! After a plumber fixed the leaky faucet in my kitchen sink, he pointed out the rotted wood in the storage area underneath and suggested I contact a handyman to replace it. I feared this would be really expensive to fix. Through a google search for a handyman, I discovered Thumbtack, which then connected me to Daniel Ball. I was really surprised by how reasonable his original quote was and am still amazed that I ultimately didn't pay anything more, even after two hours of labor. Above all, Dan was very cooperative about setting up an appointment, arrived promptly, and worked efficiently. Plus he is super-personable and friendly. Finally, I can look at the space under my kitchen sink without having to groan. (Wish I had "before" and "after photos!) I highly recommend Dan as a handy man for your home!

I needed to replace my bathroom fan and reseal my tub. Nick had a fair enough price (not the cheapest nor most expensive bid), but he was responsive. Day of he let me know he was running late, he brings his own equipment, but he's kinda quiet and didn't really explain what he was doing or offer any options on how to fix until I asked. The work was done in his estimated amount of time and it was done well. He left the old fan in the attic though. Btw, he adds material cost at the end on top of labor.

We had a great experience with Mike. He was very honest and his prices were reasonable. Mike quoted us on labor only and gave us receipts for everything he bought. He showed up on time every day and finished the job in the quoted time (1 week). He was extremely responsive and kept up with our changing requests in terms of what we wanted. We will definitely go to Mkke when we want to do another project.

My husband and I worked with Keith to renovate 2 garden areas in front of our house. We didn’t want to break concrete, so we had the challenge of making the best of the areas we had. Keith did an amazing job! We had some idea of what we wanted, and Keith provided excellent suggestions and brought lots of great ideas to the table too. Throughout the process Keith communicated extremely well, always managing expectations around time, cost of labor and cost of materials. He was very clear about his estimations and what we should budget for different parts of the job. Keith gave us the option of coming to a local nursery with him so we could pick shrubs, flowers and trees together. His horticultural knowledge really shone though, and we ended up with a good mix of perennials for major features and annuals to provides some varied interest. Part of our project involved toning down the look of an imposing chimney at the front of the house. Keith built a custom arbor and seating area that framed the chimney perfectly. Everything now looks well-designed and thought through. We’ve since started working with Keith to address our backyard too, so it’s fair to say that we’re so happy that we’d work with him again.

Mr. Sweetin was very professional in both designing and carrying out the complete bathroom remodel that I had been imagining for years. As with any remodel of an older home, you can never truly calculate what is behind the sheetrock, but Mr. Sweetin took things in stride. Although we needed to make a few alterations to our original plan, he communicated with me in a professional manner the required changes to our plan and sought approval prior to incurring additional time, labor or expenses. These changes had minimal impact on the overall timeline of the project and made us very happy with the completed project. These alterations showed that Mr. Sweetin was not interested in just getting the job done, but that we as homeowners would take pride in his attention to detail and the quality of workmanship provided. Now we have a walk-in shower and bathroom that leaves us with plenty of room, counter space and awesome tiled cubbies. The pictures provided show before and almost upon completion. As you can tell, the difference is evident and refreshing.

I called Kevin today and he came out to my house today to take a look at my project, which is installing tile in the closet under the stairs. He thoroughly explained his plan, what he needed to complete it, the approximate time it would take and how much he expected for labor. He also estimated the cost of the materials that he agreed to pick up. He was very friendly. He will be doing the project tomorrow, but so far things are off to a good start.

What a great company! I called on Friday for a new water heater and they quoted a price range over the phone when they arrived their price fell right in line with what was quoted over the phone. They also gave me a 2 year warranty on the labor which noone else I spoke with was able to do that. I called several companies A Wright was the only company that said there price would not be higher than x amount everyone else quoted me a really low amount and then said but that may change a lot if we get out there and you need more than just the water heater tank. A Wright was honest and upfront about their prices and they seem to genuinely care about their customers and the work they do! Good Job A Wright Plumbing you are my new plumber!!

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

        • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
        • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
          • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
        • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

        What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

        • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
        • Toilet replacement: $75.
        • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
        • Faucet replacement: $125.
        • Garbage disposal: $75.

        Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
