Our company hired Peter Duong for a complicated immigration visa case after interviewing him as well as other immigration attorneys. We were impressed by Peter's thorough understanding of the law as well as his determination to find ways to argue our case successfully even as other attorneys found our case futile. Peter seemed genuinely concerned about our case. He was very organized throughout and quick to respond to our emails and calls. We would love to have Peter on board for any future cases.

I chose John to help me with my messy citizenship case based on rave reviews of my friends who have consulted with him in the past. John was by far the best choice. He was extremely knowledgeable, always available to answer questions and above all, genuinely interested in helping me. He walked me through the entire process. John answered all of my questions, no matter how basic, and even calmed me down whenever I started to panic. I have heard some horrid stories about other immigration attorneys (or those claiming to be immigration attorneys) and I thank god for John every day. John is such an honest person and will tell you about your chances and best ways of obtaining a green card/citizenship even if that means he won't get any money out of your case. He is a true professional and I'm happy to have found him.

Christian is an extremely thorough, articulate, and pleasant professional to work with! He helped me and my wife through the green card application for six months, and he was invaluable to the process. He preps you for interviews, handles all your paperwork (making sure you've missed NOTHING), and represents you when the time comes. It was a pleasure working with Christian, I know exactly who to go to whenever I need immigration legal expertise.

We had a consultation with Mr. Smith, preparatory to hiring him. However, he was completely honest that we are on the right track, and will not need his services. He explained what the probable causes are in the delays we are experiencing, and he confirmed that what we planned to do is correct, plus additional tips. His expertise and honesty are remarkable: he was not insinuating that we need a lawyer at all! He is tops!

Joseph has aided us in a pro se action against the defendant. Without Joseph We would of not gotten as far as we have. His knowledge of corporate and business law to include mining is impeccable! Joe LaCome has given us the confidence to move forward. We have the utmost confidence in his abilities to see it through to the end with a positive outcome. There have not been many if any lawyers I trusted or liked but Joseph LaCome is the exception! Angela has been our family immigration lawyer for over 10 years. The first time I met her, I was accompanying my aunt for an initial consultation. I remember how anxious, overwhelmed and intimidated my aunt felt about the immigration process in general, having dealt with the agency and other lawyers. I also remember her leaving Angela's office relieved and with a big smile on her face. Angela was honest, laying out the challenges before her, but informative and inspiring confidence with all the options and solutions. Through the years, the rest of my family and I have been represented by her and consider Angela to be a dear friend of the family.

I filed an EB-1A petition two years before receiving my Ph.D. degree from Stanford. USCIS issued a 11-page RFE letter for additional evidence because I hadn't got my degree yet. I was devastated, and kind of regretted filing an immature petition that could ruin my future. I was lucky to meet Attorney Chen, who generously offered legal consultation to Ph.D. candidates in my school. She assessed the situation and promised to try her best in response to USCIS. I was totally convinced she kept her words after knowing she sent out more than 50 recommendation letter requests to professors and scholars around the world who never met me but cited my papers. 12 of them wrote back. In the end, I succeeded in the petition. I strongly recommend Attorney Chen to anyone looking for an immigration attorney. For people like me, first generation immigrant, there is too much at stake. You can't afford to screw up your legal status with some DIY project or unreliable source of information. You need a competent attorney who cares about your best interests like yourself. You deserve the expertise Attorney Chen provides and she is totally worth the money.

I know Miss. Carly Stadum since early 2012 after my Asylum case had been denied from immigration. As lawyer, Miss. Carly took my case to go to the immigration court through Georgetown University law center, Washington DC. She worked very hard until final day of my asylum case had granted. She still worked hard to make sure and approve my family's documents and to get all rights. During years 2012 to 2014 until my family safely move to the U.S she contacted to USCIS office in America, US embassies in other countries too. Miss. Carly also helped me to file my Green Card and received on time. Miss. Carly as a young lawyer has excellent knowledge of immigration case, she is hard worker, helpful and well-wisher of all. I recommend, Carly Stadum is one of the best immigration lawyer in America. I still have many more to share my experience with Carl (that I call). All the best Om

My family was seeking permanent residence for my husband. I met Daniel Roten at a pro bono opportunity at a local community center, based on his assessment of our case, his obvious ethical standards and our own judgment we decided to hire him after saving some money. Starting from day 1 Daniel was clear, concise and explained circumstances and expectations in an expertise translated into layman's terms. I can tell you that I never felt alone and he made himself available and indispensable with his intelligence as well as dedication to my young family's precarious and at times scary situation. Daniel Roten is an exceptional immigration attorney as well as a true friend and tremendous human being.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does an immigration attorney do?

Immigration lawyers help their clients through all phases of the immigration process. Experts on immigration law, they are legally qualified to represent U.S. citizens, permanent residents or undocumented immigrants. Immigration lawyers also provide assistance to visitors here on student, work or travel visas, and can represent clients who may have an expired visa or who have overstayed their visa.

You can hire an immigration lawyer to assist you with petitioning for renewing a permanent resident or green card, navigating the naturalization process, submitting an employee-based petition for a work visa, filing a petition for a family member, or representing you or a loved one who is facing detention or deportation, as well as replacing, extending or changing a current visa, green card or work permit. The immigration process is highly complex, with multiple hearings, paperwork and requirements. Hiring a legal expert to represent you can help you make your best effort in the process. When researching immigration lawyers, it is very important to verify their qualifications and find a reputable attorney. Read reviews and verify that the immigration lawyer is licensed by your state before paying any fees.

How do you find a good immigration lawyer?

Research is key to finding a good immigration lawyer. The immigration process can be overwhelming and complex, so a trustworthy advocate is critical. When you have identified several eligible candidates, verify their immigration law license to protect yourself and your finances. Once you have a set of licensed immigration lawyers in mind, choose one based on these considerations:

    • Mutual respect: You want an immigration lawyer who treats you and your family with kindness and consideration. You’ll do the same for them.
    • Availability: Before hiring, note if they have responded promptly to your emails and calls. You don’t want to hire someone you have to chase around.
    • Proven success: Read former client reviews and research their success rate with cases similar to yours.
    • Transparent rates: Ask directly about what their rates are, how they bill, and what they estimate your legal fees will be. Ask if they will sign a fee agreement, and get receipts for all fees paid.
    • Verify who will handle your case: Sometimes junior lawyers work on firm cases. This is okay, as long as you have discussed it and are comfortable with it. When junior lawyers or paralegals are working on your case, ask if the hourly rate is lower.
    • Be wary of anyone who promises you specific results: No case is certain, and the immigration lawyer should be honest about what you can expect.

How much does an immigration lawyer cost?

Immigration lawyers are experts in the nuances of the highly complex United States immigration system. They help clients of all backgrounds petition for immigration status and become U.S. citizens, and can represent clients who are facing deportation or detention. Nationally, the cost people pay for immigration lawyers averages $500-$1,010. The services you need will have a huge effect on your costs. For routines cases, such as applying for a travel visa, an immigration lawyer may be able to confidently quote you a set price, while more open-ended cases may be billed at an hourly rate of $200-$500, or more, depending on the reputation and experience of the firm and lawyer. Before hiring an immigration lawyer, ask what their plan for your case is and what expected costs may be. Many immigration lawyers work from retainers, and request a set amount of money upfront from which to work. For example, a lawyer who charges $300 per hour may estimate $4,000 for a standard family-based immigration case, the common process in which a U.S. citizen petitions for permanent residency for their spouse, fiancee or family members.
