About
I have been teaching for over 20 years. Many of my students have went on to graduate from prestigious music schools, Berklee, Cal Arts, Oberlin Conservatory , etc... Others have gone on to play professionally and some are enjoying playing the bass just for fun. I am also a Berklee Graduate and use many of the Berklee teaching methods and materials. I have performed and/or recorded throughout the States, and in Europe with players, Danny Carrey (Tool), Raymo, and Delacruz (Slightly Stoopid) Antonio Sanchez (Pat Metheny) Doug Webb (Freddie Hubbard) James Tartaglia etc... I teach all styles- Blues, Rock, Jazz, HipHop, etc.. and all levels from beginning to advanced. If you want to expand your playing to the next level, or you're a beginner looking to learn the bassics I can definitely help you, as I have with many other students on all levels. I teach from my fully equip LA air conditioned studio with capabilities to record audio/video lessons at your request. Check out my website for audio/video samples of my playing, and feel free to contact me if you have any other questions. - David Hilton
I enjoy taking students to the next level in their playing. Watching and hearing a student progress to their enjoyment is very satisfying for me. I also enjoy taking a brand new beginning student through the bassics of holding their instrument to playing popular bass lines, to beyond. Feel free to contact me for any questions about my methods and approach to teaching. Thank you, David Hilton

David is awesome! His knowledge of bass and of music in general has really brought my playing and understanding of the bass's roll in music to a new level. His experience and education really make him a great teacher for players of all ability levels.

I like most self taught musicians avoided "threory" out of fear I wouldn't understand it. So I was strictly a play by ear bass player. He first explained it's not theory is simply the rules that help one understand what the options are of what one can play to a chord, key etc... He took me from a wanna be bass player to a bass player & made it very easy to comprehend & apply, which has made me as confident as i wanted to be in most playing situations where there are musicians that know what they're talking about but I didn't. It is a great feeling to understand & know what you can play just looking at chord charts. Thanks Dave, We miss you here in San Diego!

I have been taking lessons with David on a weekly basis now for a couple of months and my experience has been stellar. David has taught me more in a month than I have learned over the past year. I have picked up a ton of very cool and useful knowledge that has me looking at music and the bass in a completely different way. Hes organized, patient and thoughtful; especially with someone like me who has only been playing for a short while and recently getting a deeper appreciation for Jazz. Right from the start David had me improvising melodies, studying chord structure, harmony and chart/sight reading. He is challenging and always inspiring me to be a better musician without being overbearing. In other words, he is a gifted teacher with the ability to extract what is in my head so I can transpose it to the fingerboard. I highly recommend that you give David a call today. You will not be disappointed.

FAQs
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
First I have to hear the student play to understand where they are in their playing. Also we talk in detail to establish where they want to take their own playing and create a practice/performing/ plan to achieve their musical goals.
With Beginning students we go from the very start of how to hold the bass, how it is tuned, right and left hand technique, learning to use your ear and how to read music ect...
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a professiona bass player and a Berklee College of Music Graduate. I have been playing and performing music since I was 9 years old.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I feel the work actually chose me, and there never was a question I would be a musician/teacher
