Introduction: I not only teach students to play piano, but I also provide an opportunity for students to perform at two recitals each year: winter and spring. Recital halls are typically at a college recital hall or at a small theater that I rent so students get the real feeling of being on stage. Fun!

Dean has an extensive repertoire of Jazz, Latin, Swing and Funk; only second to his ability to improvise on a moment’s notice. I’ve played in various capacities with Dean and was never left disappointed. His music style is fun and professional, and is sure to please the crowd.

Dean is a very capable piano teacher and was extremely patient with my 10-year old daughter. My daughter took lessons with Dean for nearly 4-years before he moved to CO. He uses a method that stresses fundamentals, but also has the skills to teach improvisation so students can play what they feel. Dean also provided opportunities for my daughter to perform at his winter and spring recitals which was rare for many teachers that we looked at before finding Dean. These were really nice as well since he held them at the college recital halls.

I played in a jazz quintet with Mr. Bacalzo. Dean was the band leader and organizer, choosing the songs we played and making arrangement decisions in a collaborative setting. Dean's command of the piano and musical theory knowledge were two of his strongest attributes. He exercised an impressive and creative ability in his improvisational skills and out-of-box interpretations of our jazz standard repertoire.

I know about Dean's musicianship because we have been gigging together in a jazz trio/quartet since the summer. Not only does Dean's personality make it fun, but I dig his chops on his solos. He is able to generate excitement and play in different styles. I enjoy the musical interaction we have. Dean demonstrates very good understanding of the theory of jazz changes, and incorporates them well in his performances. We have had some fun discussions on changes, and I enjoy learning from him. If you are looking for someone to study with or gig with, I recommend Dean Bacalzo.

As an event coordinator for Design council at the Denver Art Museum I have had outstanding service from Dean. He and his group played for our Holiday party last year and everyone was very impressed by the talented group. We have used them repeatedly through the year (and for this years party)! They are reliable, responsible, friendly and provide great music. If I say anymore good things they might be booked when I need them!

FAQs

  • Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

After playing in the Denver winery for over 6-months for wine, we were able to meet and start playing regular gigs with the Denver Art Museum. We've since played Holiday parties, gallery openings, as well as several summer parties.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Talk to as many teachers as you can possibly can. Each one is different. There are great players that can't teach, but there are also some marginal players that are great teachers...

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Piano lessons are a great way to teach children about practice and learning to "do something every day". Improvement is incremental, and the longer it takes to develop a skill, the longer it will stay with you.
