Introduction: There are as many ways to learn to play modern popular music on guitar, bass or vocals as there are people wanting to do so. That's why I broke away from the "old school," the traditional, the factory-style, "one size fits all" approaches still typical in the industry today. I emphasize a Fun Style way of learning, first by helping people learn to play THEIR Music of Choice, second by breaking it down to a level of simplicity. Everyone I work with starts playing something from the very first lesson. They're excited to go home and play the new things they've just learned. I strive to keep it fun; after all, there's always something new and cool to play! I love watching my players' eyes light up when they discover that they too can play their favorite music. Many find that becoming a Musician is a thrilling, life-transforming process, bringing confidence and healing. This is what makes teaching music my "dream job come true." For those on a budget (and who isn't?) I run certain Specials ongoing: The Young People's (Age 18-25) and the Good Old Guy/Gal Discounts are both $5 off my usual rate of $35 per full-hour lesson. These can be used in conjunction with my 5-for-4 Special, 5 full-hour lessons for the price of 4! The Extra Player Special really is: Just $5 over the single-player rate, because two players are better than one! Ever since the COVID-19 restrictions came into play, I have added Zoom Meeting for an online lesson option, and now JamKazam, enabling live, real-time group playing at a distance.

Guitar Lessons

Phil is a great guy who is passionate about what he does. I'm a beginner, and on our first lesson he was very patient and made it a fun experience. I'm looking forward to my next visit.

Guitar Lessons (for adults)

My first lesson was extremely positive and helpful. He put me right at ease. Phil was so cool and made the lesson easy to understand. He is very organized and talented. I can't wait to get rockin' like him.

Guitar Lessons

Had my first lesson with Phil, a full hour. Best guitar instructor I've had. Smart, funny, but didn't waste time. Taught me something new and important within the first few minutes! Very impressed so far.

Guitar Lessons

Phil unlocked the secrets of playing bass; as a beginner he gave me the confidence to try more difficult works with his encouragement, I look forward to working again with him!

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

Helping people to learn the guitar in a new, fun way. Wrangling virtually any song of your choice to help you play it, while coming to understand and apply the note theory and beat theory behind it. Showing players how to figure out most popular songs, as well as improvise -- groovily and with feeling. Hosting two kinds free jams: Acoustic and the Band Jam. Everyone's welcome! These jams let players experience the thrill of group playing, and are designed to be comfortably easy.

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I saw the need for a more relaxed, yet accelerated approach to playing for today's busy student. I taught people in bands how to play their repertoires for about 30 years before turning to offer my services to the general public. My calendar is always full. Very few teachers in my field here in Colorado Springs at this time approach the process of teaching music in ways that are tailored to the individual's needs, fun, progressive and effective.

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

Left- and Right-handers; the Left- and Right-Brained; Left- and Right-Winged players; Science fanatics and flat Earthers; terrestrials and ETs... Children with Autism and Aspergers; accident victims with TBI; combat veterans with PTSD; terminally ill patients who died while learning... Protégés and proto-stars, composers and comptrollers; the rapt and therapists... Toddlers to Dawdlers; girls, boys, teens and in-betweens; haves and have-nots; deep thinkers and foul-smellers; the tone-deaf and the beat-deaf... The one thing all my players have had in common is that they walk a path of personal creative growth - and I'm constantly reminded of how fortunate I am to have the job that I do.
