I hired Val from Carter Rey Photography to photograph my daughter's 10th birthday, Aug. 12th 2023. The event was at my home. Vao responded right away to my Thumbtack request, and was enthusiastic and kind when we messaged about the project (talking on the phone would be hard for me between two kids, work, running around, etc.) She was punctual, responsive, kind, but most important, a very talented photographer and wonderful with the kids. She was engaged and pushed to have group shots (but not in an obtrusive way). She took wonderful candid photos of the kids on the trampoline and the bouncy house (even got down in the middle of the trampoline). While she was involved and helpful and was the one organizing people into groups (I didn't have to, yay!), she was never obtrusive. She was a great addition to the party. In fact, she made me a little too relaxed, I barely took any photographs. (I am the family photographer.)
I love the images she captured and I'm so thankful to have them. She made the day easier and wound up being another helpful adult and helped with an odd situation. She's caring, empathetic, patient and talented.
I will definitely recommend Vao from Carter Rey Photography to everyone I know and hire her for future projects. Feel free to reach out if you have any specific questions. I've hired Thumbtack professionals before for my children's birthday parties, and even a family reunion. I am a picture obsessed person, because I know how quickly life can change and how images are what we have left. I'm so thankful to Vao for giving them these beautiful additions. I've met a lot of great local photographers. Vao is definitely among the top. I appreciated that I told her what we were hoping for an then I didn't have to give really any other direction or micromanage. I hate to do that and I'm sure she would to. I could easily imagine her for her wedding assignments. She's talented at the portrait shot but also the candid ones. She handles large groups well, and she's a beautiful addition to the party.

We had a very small ceremony & could not have picked a better photographer. First of all, Carter was really nice. She was great at sharing her own ideas but also keeping our ideas in mind. She was able to able to capture off guard moments, which were the most beautiful to me. The pictures came out amazing!

Vao was very quick to respond to any questions I had before the shoot. During the shoot Vao was very sweet and patient with our toddler, she let her do her thing. Our photos are absolutely beautiful and definitely recommend her for family portraits. We are so glad we booked her on our little gateway from Texas.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have completed a mentorship with the renowned Jessica Byrum of Jessica Byrum Photography. She has taught me a great deal and offers continuous mentorship so I can pop in with questions at any time. I have also taken a few online Adobe photoshop courses while I was working on my undergraduate degree.
