Henry is a master teacher for serious students who really want to advance in music theory. He teaches because he loves music and loves to share it with others. He excels at teaching the language of music so people reach the point where they can really enjoy playing, especially jazz piano and guitar. He studied at UC Berkeley for 12 years and has taught at other colleges - he can take students as far as they want to go. He can also teach flute, clarinet, sax, and other instruments if those are your cup of tea. And he directs a local jazz a cappella choir as well. So if you have any musical inclination, he can nourish and expand it. While he's great with advanced students, Henry also has a gift for finding creative ways to teach children and young adults, many of whom may have unique needs and abilities. My daughter explored his roomful of instruments on her own and discovered which she loved to play the most (the harp -- who knew?). Oh, and he's amazing at repairing and tuning up instruments so they play well.

I know plenty of professional musicians but none with the breadth of knowledge and skill as Henry. He's an excellent pianist, guitarist, arranger, and singer. And he has a great sense of humor! I've enjoyed singing in his jazz-a-cappella ensemble for the past four years. If you are looking for a musical guide Henry is your man!

Henry teaches guitar in a way that just makes more sense. I've learned a ton while he's been teaching me. Also he has a metaphor for everything :)

Henry Sherman, has been setting up my guitars professionally for years; I won't take my investment in instruments to any one else. Every time the guitars come back to me much better than factory settings. I would recommend Henry to anyone looking for not only guitar set up but expert instrument repair as well.

I joined an adult a Capella singing group last September which which is led by Henry Sherman. Henry is a very astute and thorough vocal leader as well as arranger of sheet music. Very dependable and consciencious. He is a pleasure to work with.

FAQs

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Call me to discuss your needs and my experience in what works and doesn't work with students. I have been teaching over 3 decades and have learned much more effective techniques for teaching. I have been teaching community classes for over 20 years and privately for 35 years, which has culminated in my writing two books on Applied Music Theory. Save yourself a LOT of strife and wasted effort by practicing the right things that will gain you the fastest and deepest rewards. Flexibility in teaching methods, and not expecting my one method of teaching to work, allows me to adjust and use one of many, many methods that I have seen work well over the years.
