I have been blessed to call Steve Pearlman a teacher and a friend for many years. His consisent work ethic and dedication to the Martial Arts has remained inspirational throughout. Like Bruce Lee, who took the best parts of various Martial Arts to create his art, Steve is a pioneer in the field. When I first began to read his book (The Book of Martial Power), I stopped myself halfway through and restarted. I found there was so much practicality in his style that I needed to start over again, fearing I may miss something. Never had I read so much about the delivery of technique and maintenance of structure that has not been puffed up with filler. There is no fluff in the book or in his style, whatsoever. Wrapping my head around his concepts has been nothing but thrilling over the years. Everything Steve teaches is practical and geared toward self-defense that is highly effective. Praxis Martial Arts teaches the delivery of sound and powerful technique through seemingly effortless movement. You will work hard reaching this state of effortless technique, but the end result is the knowledge and muscle memory needed to quickly defuse and/or control a physical confrontation. Chris is by far the best personal trainer I've ever had. He cares so much for his clients and makes sure he is pushing you to your full potential. Tang Soo Do is a wonderful martial art that provides great discipline, self respect, flexibility and a great source of weight loss. The teachers at Valley Karate are fantastic and they provide a variety of different instructions in line work, terminology, forms, one-step self defense techniques and grabs. They make themselves available for any help or support that is needed by any student. Valley Karate provides a great family inclusion aspect with Parents Night, Buddy Week and Family day. They also hold kids tournaments that make each of them winners no matter what happens and will be holding their first school tournament next Saturday, March 26th. Master Bergers is a superb role model for all the kids and adults, as well as all the other Masters and Dans. Finally, the students all aspire for Black Belt excellence at whatever level they are. Chris was excellent! We met for about an hour workout, starting with a warmup and some focused instruction and then bag work. It was an absolute blast and he is very knowledgeable. Chris taught me how to fit and I feel like I can take those skills into self defense if it were ever needed. Would highly highly recommend his services and classes.
To Whom It May Concern, I am writing this testimonial to inform you of the talent and passion of my good friend, and teacher, Eric Stowe. While I met Eric while in high school, I did not get to know him until we met again after college. It is important to note, that up to age 19, I was overweight, and unfit physically. I was awkward, and when I walk, I tended, as my mother would say, to lumber. While in college, I lost a good bit of weight, and for a couple semesters, studied Shotokan Karate. Shotokan is a hard style karate, and practices included 45 minutes of strenuous exercise, followed by 15 to 30 minutes of technique or form. While my physical health improved some, I learned very little that would benefit me. After graduating, I met Eric when a mutual friend brought me to a class he was teaching. While we did warm up with some exercises, Eric quickly moved into techniques, so when we left the class, we had a feeling of accomplishment, that we had actually learned something that we could use. I immediately signed up to study under Eric, and continued to study with him for over 15 years. Within a year, my mother commented that while she wasnt sure how she felt about me studying the martial arts, she loved the changes she had seen in me. I stood more erect, I no longer lumbered when I walked, I was more graceful on my feet and more confident in life in general. I have seen Eric work with both men and women, both younger and older. From a middle school aged boy who studied for several years, to a retired woman who joined the class for about one year. Eric is a gifted teacher whose flexibility ensures that everyone in the class, from the most inexperienced, to the seasoned veteran, benefit from the time spent with him. Hello, and thank you for inquiring. We're sure that you have lots of questions. We hope that some will be answered in the paragraphs below. So, let's get to it! We are a privately own business with our studio located at 360 Main Street, Ansonia, CT 06401. My wife Jennifer and I (Edison) had been teaching privately for over 10 years now. Our students range from 10 to 80 years of age. Our classes are small (no more than five students per class). Some students prefer to work alone; we do that, too. In our basic self-defense class, we focus in teaching the mechanics of joint manipulation, the proper ways to punch and kick (no flying kicks here) and how to use your elbows and the rest of your body to protect and use as a weapon. The students also learn to use the opponent's momentum to execute simple, yet effective moves. In the intermediate class, you'll learn to anticipate the opponent's moves and move in as close as possible to take them off balance. Finally, in the advance level, you'll learn to execute defensive-attacking moves, strike with precision and speed at this level. We also introduce defense against weapons as well as how to use weapons for your own protection. One last point, although we are black martial artists, we are not a martial arts school. No particulate discipline is taught. We evaluate our students' abilities and tailor our teaching for them to become more practical, efficient and yes, lethal! The American Studio of Martial Arts offers the most comprehensive martial arts program in the area. Sifu Miller began teaching Jiao Shou in this area in 1999 and continues to provide students with a safe, noncompetitive environment. Along with learning history, philosophy, and culture, students will learn very practical and effective self-defense techniques. I've been involved in the physical training since the age of 4. I was a track and field athlete. I started mixed martial arts when I was 9. I got a granted college scholarship as a 200-meter-runner athlete. I became a registered dietitian and a certified personal physical trainer at the age of 23. I am a certified personal trainer (NASM) and fitness nutrition specialist. I also teach Bruce Lee's martial arts, jeet kune do. I have a diverse background in self-defense prior having studied taekwondo, Shaolin Kempo Karate, boxing, and MMA.
We provide reality based self-defense training for women. Our program is layered, progressing from Avoidance through De-escalation, Discouragement, and finally Destruction. The first two layers are not physical. The last two are. Counter attacks in the Discouragement layer range from relatively mild to relatively harsh. The last layer involves all-out- no rules counter attacks designed to incapacitate an attacker and ensure that the client, not the attacker walks away. Although our instructors hold advanced black belt degrees in more than one martial art, we do not teach martial arts or combat sports. What we teach would be illegal in any of them including MMA. We also provide the physical and mental training necessary to effectively utilize this program.
