I have played piano for 55 years. In the past I taught. Mr. Broderson is teaching me to play jazz and blues. He is articulate and enthusiastic. His demonstrations are always on point. He is able to recognize my strengths and weaknesses and designs lessons to incorporate my skills with new challenges. I am very happy with Gary as my teacher.

Not only is their music beautiful and soulful, but they were extremely professional. S&S were completely flexible with what we wanted; they set realistic expectations and their main goal was to see us happy. One of the highlights of our wedding!!

My teenager had given up on the piano because he was sick of competitions. He now has finally found the joy of playing and composing music with his teacher Michael and is now interested in playing another instrument to complement piano.

Taking lessons with Jonathan has been a blast. While I'm not a "new" person I'm a pretty new player and the variety of music I've learned has kept it interesting and challenging. We've worked on classical pieces, Beatles, bluegrass and jazz and blues. He's taught me a lot of theory as well as practical technique. And how to practice. The past few years have changed the way I listen to music.

Krissy was great. She has a lovely calm and yet super fun energy and really made my daughters 7th birthday party special. She is tremendous value for money as she has a whole bag of tricks up her sleeves to keep the little ones occupied and happy. As soon as she left they all started running around and creating chasos. So I realised what a great influence she had been. She broad beads, face paint and is the most talented face painter ans balloon modelling artist I had ever encountered ! It all seems effortless. What a talented lady.

The Red Hots are exactly just that! Petra and Cynthia are HOT! They each have a distinct beautiful voice that compliment each other well. And Petra's ukulele playing is so wonderful! I especially like their originals. On first hearing the tunes they wrote I assumed they were classics from the 40's or 50's and was so amazed to discover they were written by either Petra,Cynthia or Russ. Russ by the way is not only a great songwriter and musician he's an all around great guy. And Jay is the man that keeps the beat swinging. Another great guy! Definitely do yourself a favor and check them out live and also their videos on you tube.

Daisy is a fantastic teacher! I am a trained musician but very shy singer, and have been learning from Daisy to help me singing with my band. These lessons have really developed my confidence, helped me find and trust in my own voice, and sing with better technique as my mind is not constricting my sound anymore. Her lessons are peaceful and meditative - she teaches without judgement and with gentle guidance to finding your own sound (previous vocal teachers have always been trying to mould my voice into a preconceived idiomatic sound). The crystal and Tibetan singing bowls are just magical! I can't imagine where my singing would be without her.

Thomas was my daughter's piano teacher from 3rd to 5th grade. Thomas' patient and easygoing manner enabled a sometimes reluctant student to explore music at her pace. Besides learning to read music, my daughter proudly learned special arrangements of popular music and their historical influences. Today, my daughter is 14 and loves music: she performs regularly at church and with ensembles. She's never had any other music teacher, but Thomas.

Matt has knowledge of, and an appreciation for ALL types of music. Of course this is difficult because he attended Stony Brook in the 60's and was exposed to the very best of Rock music. But he transcended that period, kept his high regards for Dylan and Jimi, and continued to grow as a musician and person. I've seem him at several jobs, and he reads the audience very well and makes the event a happy occasion for all.

Dave has been great! The first day I called he immediately set up an appointment with one of his guitar instructors, Mike Bennet. I highly recommend taking lessons with Mike. He is always on time, he is very flexible with scheduling lessons, and he is an amazing guitar player! I am only a beginner but I feel that Mike has taught me so much. I love learning with him and am having so much fun. I've been taking lessons already for four months and have been having a great experience. Thus, I highly recommend progressive music group and specifically Mike Bennet if you want to learn how to jam!

Arthur is an excellent, very well-rounded, guitar instructor. He is very knowledgeable in quite a few aspects of guitar playing - from music theory, playing different styles, transcribing, to all the guitar gear and technology stuff. He has a nice studio, and is also very accuracy oriented, which I really like. I'm into learning to play the blues, rock and metal, and Arthur has been really helpful with that. Highly recommended!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
