I wanted my teens to learn self defense and I'm so glad to have found common sense fitness. The cost, teaching and travel was great. He teach them things they were clueless about and now I feel confident that in a situation they will at least be able to know what to do. I recommend Stephen to anyone looking to learn self defense!!!!
Gil Pinheiro is an extremely dedicated and motivating individual. He consistently strives to take the student outside of his/her comfort zone in an effort to constantly maintain forward training momentum. His skill level in the martial arts is tremendous and his passion for cultivating performance is both awesome and inspiring. I sincerely recommend Gil Pinheiro for anyone at any level who is interested in setting themselves apart from the rest. Gil is results oriented, a mentor and a true professional in every facet of MMA style training. -C. Brown
Chris is an exceptional trainer. I have worked with him for a year and in that time I lost 50 pounds and added lean muscle to get to the strongest I have ever been. Chris was able to tailor my workout to reach my fitness goals and improve my golf game by targeting specific areas to enhance strength and rotational power. Chris is extremely knowledgeable trainer from his years of experience. He does not use a "cookie cutter" method of training and was very dedicated to meeting my personal goals as they evolved over the course of my training. I was drawn to Chris for his extensive boxing background and interest in learning about the sport. He checks in frequently outside of our sessions and has been committed to my success by understanding that goals are met through continuous motivation and tracking progress. I would highly recommend Chris to anyone interested in reaching their fitness goals and expanding their knowledge in the world of fitness.
Best place to train and best coaches and team mates around
I had Greg do a self defense training class for my son and 5 of his friends. This was the boys first training class, Greg was patient with them and made sure everyone felt comfortable with what they had learned. It was a hands on class, and I would highly recommend any of the courses Greg offers. When my son applied for his license to carry he had a few questions, I directed him back to Mr. Burns and he was able to guide him.
We started at Anshin when Mike held an anti-bullying workshop. Mike has been a great instructor for both of my sons. Mike focuses on encouraging kids to grow in martial arts skills and respect for one another. My sons really enjoy learning and practicing at Anshin. My sons have learned to practice self control and gained self confidence.
I have been a student of the martial arts for 15 years, primarily in Kempo and Aikido, though I've dabbled in other styles. Dr. Pearlman has researched and studied classical styles to teach modern self defense. His classes have opened my eyes and my mind to a deeper understanding of the martial arts. Besides learning new techniques and applications, my performance in the other styles I practice have also improved. Dr. Pearlman's style is holistic, in the sense that it covers a wide range while keeping everything integrated. Strikes, kicks, locks, trapping and ground techniques are all covered. The focus is on self-defense, not fighting. Classes are relaxed but intense, great for beginners and experienced practitioners. I cannot recommend Praxis Martial Arts enough. Come down and see it for yourself.
Tang Soo Do is a wonderful martial art that provides great discipline, self respect, flexibility and a great source of weight loss. The teachers at Valley Karate are fantastic and they provide a variety of different instructions in line work, terminology, forms, one-step self defense techniques and grabs. They make themselves available for any help or support that is needed by any student. Valley Karate provides a great family inclusion aspect with Parents Night, Buddy Week and Family day. They also hold kids tournaments that make each of them winners no matter what happens and will be holding their first school tournament next Saturday, March 26th. Master Bergers is a superb role model for all the kids and adults, as well as all the other Masters and Dans. Finally, the students all aspire for Black Belt excellence at whatever level they are. Valley Karate rocks!
Chris was excellent! We met for about an hour workout, starting with a warmup and some focused instruction and then bag work. It was an absolute blast and he is very knowledgeable. Chris taught me how to fit and I feel like I can take those skills into self defense if it were ever needed. Would highly highly recommend his services and classes.
To Whom It May Concern, I am writing this testimonial to inform you of the talent and passion of my good friend, and teacher, Eric Stowe. While I met Eric while in high school, I did not get to know him until we met again after college. It is important to note, that up to age 19, I was overweight, and unfit physically. I was awkward, and when I walk, I tended, as my mother would say, to lumber. While in college, I lost a good bit of weight, and for a couple semesters, studied Shotokan Karate. Shotokan is a hard style karate, and practices included 45 minutes of strenuous exercise, followed by 15 to 30 minutes of technique or form. While my physical health improved some, I learned very little that would benefit me. After graduating, I met Eric when a mutual friend brought me to a class he was teaching. While we did warm up with some exercises, Eric quickly moved into techniques, so when we left the class, we had a feeling of accomplishment, that we had actually learned something that we could use. I immediately signed up to study under Eric, and continued to study with him for over 15 years. Within a year, my mother commented that while she wasnt sure how she felt about me studying the martial arts, she loved the changes she had seen in me. I stood more erect, I no longer lumbered when I walked, I was more graceful on my feet and more confident in life in general. I have seen Eric work with both men and women, both younger and older. From a middle school aged boy who studied for several years, to a retired woman who joined the class for about one year. Eric is a gifted teacher whose flexibility ensures that everyone in the class, from the most inexperienced, to the seasoned veteran, benefit from the time spent with him. I would recommend anyone looking to improve their health, balance, or peace of mind in a violent world, to spend time studying with him.
We use real world threats and train our students to be self aware of their surroundings and how to completely defend themselves in any type of stressful situation.

Hello, and thank you for inquiring. We're sure that you have lots of questions. We hope that some will be answered in the paragraphs below. So, let's get to it! We are a privately own business with our studio located at 360 Main Street, Ansonia, CT 06401. My wife Jennifer and I (Edison) had been teaching privately for over 10 years now. Our students range from 10 to 80 years of age. Our classes are small (no more than five students per class). Some students prefer to work alone; we do that, too. In our basic self-defense class, we focus in teaching the mechanics of joint manipulation, the proper ways to punch and kick (no flying kicks here) and how to use your elbows and the rest of your body to protect and use as a weapon. The students also learn to use the opponent's momentum to execute simple, yet effective moves. In the intermediate class, you'll learn to anticipate the opponent's moves and move in as close as possible to take them off balance. Finally, in the advance level, you'll learn to execute defensive-attacking moves, strike with precision and speed at this level. We also introduce defense against weapons as well as how to use weapons for your own protection. One last point, although we are black martial artists, we are not a martial arts school. No particulate discipline is taught. We evaluate our students' abilities and tailor our teaching for them to become more practical, efficient and yes, lethal! We are looking forward to hearing from you! Best regards, Jennifer and Edison

We provide reality based self-defense training for women. Our program is layered, progressing from Avoidance through De-escalation, Discouragement, and finally Destruction. The first two layers are not physical. The last two are. Counter attacks in the Discouragement layer range from relatively mild to relatively harsh. The last layer involves all-out- no rules counter attacks designed to incapacitate an attacker and ensure that the client, not the attacker walks away. Although our instructors hold advanced black belt degrees in more than one martial art, we do not teach martial arts or combat sports. What we teach would be illegal in any of them including MMA. We also provide the physical and mental training necessary to effectively utilize this program.
I teach woman assault avoidance and defense through the Girls On Guard seminar model. In 1 to 3 sessions, we can teach you how to become a "Hard Target". This makes you unappealing to a predator, and if you are picked, teaches you how to fight back and survive.
