Rachel W. says, "As a new homeowner, having a plumber I trust is critical, and I trust Jim and his team. Jim is very communicative, they show up on time and prepared for the work, and do (from what I can tell) a great job. Jim and Heli are both really nice, happy to explain things that are beyond my almost non-existent plumbing knowledge, and very courteous. So far, Jim has replaced my hot water heater, checked out all the taps and toilets after my inspector recommended it, and came out with no more than 24 hours' notice when my sewer line backed up during the first weekend after we moved in, with no problems since then. He also gave me some great info about pricing for future projects I'm considering which helps me plan my home renovation list, and his prices seem very fair to me. Jim and Plumbums are the only plumbers I want to work with and I am more than happy to recommend them!"See more

Sandra L. says, "I didn’t think that repair companies like this one still existed! My husband called on a Friday to make a repair appointment for our Samsung dryer, and was told that the earliest they can send would be Monday but I insisted if they can set me up for next day- Saturday because it's our day off, perfect day to have the tech out. They set us up on a 4 hour window, told us that technician would call if available. The tech arrived and to my surprise actually following CDC recommendations nand guidelines and wore mask and shoe coverings to keep us protected. The tech informed us that the rattle that we heard was simply lint built up around the blower. Tech recommended that we get the duct cleaned out every few years (it had been over 7) and that might help prevent the problem from returning. I spent less than a hundred dollars! Professional, friendly service with reasonable rates are unheard of these days, but now I have found at least one! Thank you, WE FIX IT APPLIANCE!"See more

Ashwini B. says, "I hired Bamm's to change my heating oil hydro forced air system as well as the water heater to the Air source heat pump and Hybrid heat pump water heater. His team installed 2 three ton cold climate ASHP with 2 Air handlers (Tosot T Unix, it is rebadged Gree flexx). Then replaced the water heater to Rheem 50G Hybrid Water heater. Got rid of the old oil furnace and water heater. Initially the proposal was $21k. As my project needed some additional electric wiring and I requested to file permits first, these cost extra. The total cost of the project was close to ~$25k (this included sales tax for the new equipment, electric wiring charges and filing charges). No ductwork needed. CT installers were either too expensive or didn't provide cold climate ASHP options. The project did take longer than expected. They installed the first heat pump in April end (takes about 1 day per equipment), the next one 15 days or so later and the water heater as well. Junk removal was scheduled 20 days later or so. But installers made sure we had heat and hot water except during actual installation. This is a constructive feedback I would give Rich, that is he needs to give better time estimate and needs some assistant who can do the paperwork. That is to say things like invoices, clear estimate breakdown. He needs to communicate the expectations clearly such as what is extra and what is included. This will go a long way. That's why I removed 1 star from the review. We initially thought old equipment removal included oil tank removal, which is not the case. As long as it was made clear in the project estimate it would have been better. Originally Rich was not part of the Energize CT installer network. Up on my request he registered on it as it is needed for CT residents to claim any rebates, which was nice. This was one of the main decision making criteria for the project for us, the other being price. Project came with 1 yr workmanship warranty and 10 yr parts warranty. It's been 5 months since the installation. However, Had one issue with the heat pump not producing enough heat, which was a result of adding low refrigerant level during installation, Rich sent his team member Matt, who diagnosed it and took care of it. So far all is well."See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the most common type of heating system?

The most common type of home heating system is a forced-air heating and cooling system. This type of heater involves a furnace, which is commonly powered by natural gas, forcing air through a series of ducts that distribute the hot air through different rooms in a house. Furnaces can run on other types of fuel, including electricity, propane and oil. This type of heating system is quite popular because it doubles as a path for air conditioning in the summer.

Why is my air conditioner leaking water?

An air conditioner leaking inside the house is a common problem. It could indicate that the air filter is dirty. Or, one of the following may be the culprit:

  • Clogged condensate drain line
  • Leaky, damaged, cracked or rusted drain pan
  • Dirty or broken coils
  • Frozen evaporator coils
  • Broken condensate pump
  • Not enough refrigerant
  • Disconnected drain line

If your AC is leaking, contact a repair service to find out what the problem is — and how much it will cost to fix it.

What is the most efficient heating system for a house?

Geothermal heating tends to be the most efficient way to heat a house when compared to traditional HVAC systems, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Geothermal heat pumps (also called ground-source heat pumps) transfer energy to and from the ground to supply heat, cool air and hot water.

Note that one of the most important ways to boost efficiency, save electricity and lower your heating bills is to make sure your house is weather-tight and well-insulated.

How much does it cost to install a heating system?

The cost of a heating system depends largely on the type and size of the heating system. For example:

Can I install central air myself?

While you may be able to do some preparation work for central air installation, you should hire a licensed contractor to complete the project and handle the air conditioning refrigerants.

Also, unless you have the proper credentials, you risk making common mistakes when installing central air. This may include installing the wrong-size furnace, improperly installing ductwork and exhaust systems, and incorrectly managing drainage.

To ensure your central air is installed correctly, contact the best HVAC pros near you and start getting free estimates today.

Does central air add value to a home?

A central air unit or HVAC system may add value to your home. Or, if you’re in the process of selling your home, it may help you close a sale.

The Remodeling Impact report found that 20% of realtors have suggested that home sellers replace their HVAC before attempting to sell their homes, and 7% said this project did help close a sale.

Talk with an expert to figure out if adding an HVAC system is a good idea for your home. And contact the best HVAC pros near you to get free estimates so you’ll know how much this project will cost you.

Is it worth it to install central air?

Depending on where you live, it might be worth it to install central air. Central air makes your house comfortable on hot summer days. And although it’s hard to predict if adding central air will increase your home’s value, prospective homebuyers will certainly notice if it’s missing.

Another advantage of central air is that it can help dehumidify your home. Not only will it make your home more comfortable and enjoyable, but it can also  help prevent mold from growing or spreading.

Contact the best HVAC contractors near you to learn more about the central air installation process and to start receiving free estimates.

How long does it take to install a new heating system?

A new heating system generally takes a few days to install. Jobs that require new ductwork will take more time. And switching to a different type of heat fuel — propane, natural gas, oil or electricity — may require longer installation times as well, as they could require routing piping, regulators and other adjustments to your home.

When should you replace a heating system?

The better care you take of your heating system, the longer it will last. The International Association of Certified Home Inspectors estimates the following lifespans for heating systems:

  • Heat exchanger: 10-15 years
  • Heat pump: 10-15 years
  • Furnace: 15-25 years
  • Electric radiant heater: 40 years

If your heating system is broken, hire a contractor or a repair service to take a look at it. They can help you determine if it makes financial sense to replace your system or spend money on repairs. The good news is that replacing your old furnace will give you the opportunity to take advantage of newer, more efficient furnaces that can save you money on heating bills from the first cycle.

How does a hot water baseboard heating system work?

In a hot water baseboard heating system, a boiler heats water and then the water passes through the system’s pipes and into the baseboard radiators in your home. Baseboard heating systems are generally quiet, and you’ll experience less heat loss when compared to a forced-air system. However, you can’t use radiant basement heating for cooling purposes.
