Jamie drove over an hour to be here for our 2 parties. She was able to meet every request I made. I asked for her to do henna work but with fine tip pens/markers since it would be for kids around age 5 - regular henna paste would have been a mess. She brought different colored pens to choose from, in addition to glitter tattoos, glitter henna designs, and more. We had boys and girls in attendance along with many adults. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the variety of choices, her warm/friendly personality, her extreme patience with choices being made, asking the kids questions about color, etc. She was incredibly low maintenance i.e. didn't need anything, was set up quick and ready to go, and cleaned up quick too. Most of the adults got something done as well and were elated at her skill set to do such detailed work by hand! Her assistant was under the weather that day so she did both parties solo. She also messaged me to confirm plans a few days before. I highly recommend her!

Awesome experience with Sarita at my kids 7th birthday party. She was on time and began working immediately. The children and adults were more than pleased with her work. The line was so long we had to book an additional hour which Sarita was more than happy to accommodate. I will recommend her services to anyone looking for a great all around Henna artist in the area! Thanks again for making the party extra special!

Everybody loved their henna tattoo. She was really nice and she took her time with each person. When someone gave her a design, she was able to draw it. Best henna artist I would trust.

Namita was great! She was on time, very friendly, patient, and her artwork was fantastic. We loved that she was willing to henna men for our mehendi, though we were a bit disappointed that she wasn't willing to give them their requested designs, but designs she had for men only and that we did not know that when we hired her. However, not many henna artists are willing to henna men, so we're still thankful she was willing to do it. At the end of the day, we felt exceptionally beautiful for our wedding thanks to Namita's work and would recommend her.

Heather has been an absolute joy to work with. I hired her onto my team and she has become one of my favorite artists to work with. She adheres to all deadlines, works within our brand standards, and is proactive when developing creative for every program and holiday. She also works incredibly well with the rest of the team (and by that I mean 120 team members) at the Mt. Washington store. I enjoy working with her so much that I exclusively contract her for personal artwork as well!

I had wanted a very specific and nuanced project done for about ten years now: A very heavy metal looking portrait of myself. Yes its silly. But I wanted it. So badly. Just me, in a t-shirt and jeans, doing something so metal it would take your breath away. For a decade I had this idea and I'm glad I waited. No other artist could have delivered my vision for me as well as Katie Haire did. Katie was super easy to work with. She took time to listen to what I wanted done and then improved on my original ideas in ways I would have never thought possible. I now have a work of art that reflects what I wanted that will last me a life time. I can not recommend Katie hard enough. Beyond being a prodigious artist, she is an admirable human; patient, understanding, punctual, and brilliant. Congrats to you, dear reader -- your search is over. You have found your artist.

We hired Payal as a henna artist for our daughter's graduation party. Payal was prompt and professional and created some beautiful customized henna designs. She was such a crowd pleaser that we had her stay on for a few more hours. I would definitely use payal against other events and would highly recommend her!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.

How much does it cost to get a henna tattoo?

Nationally, the average cost to hire a henna artist is between $100 and $180 per hour. Rates will vary by location and the experience of the individual henna artist; it’s possible to find artists who charge less than $50 per hour. Some henna artists charge an hourly rate, especially for corporate events or festivals where they are providing service to multiple people within an hour. They may also charge flat rates for bridal and wedding services or special events. Here are some examples of average cost:

      • Hourly rate: $65-$85 or more per hour. Price is dependent on event size and number of attendees.
      • Starting rate for minimal palm designs: $15 or more.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands and wrist and bottom of feet up to the ankle: $175.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the mid-arm and feet to above the ankle: $300.
      • Henna tattoos covering the hands to the elbow and the feet to the knee: $450.
