Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a bankruptcy attorney cost?

Hourly rates for bankruptcy attorneys range from $200-$300. In total, customers spend an average of $999-$1,183 for their services. But because lawyers have different fee structures, you should always ask for an estimate from several bankruptcy attorneys in your area before hiring one.

How do you find a bankruptcy attorney?

You’ll need to conduct a little bit of research to find the best bankruptcy lawyer for your situation. Start by pulling up a list of attorneys near you. Identify a few lawyers who have high ratings, mostly positive customer reviews and the required credentials in your state.

Once you have a list of three to five potential attorneys you can hire, figure out how much they charge. Ask for a free cost estimate (what are their hourly rates?) and ask them to explain their fee schedule. Choose an attorney with a solid track record and reputation, fair pricing and the right credentials.

How do lawyers get paid if they lose a case?

Lawyers typically charge for their time (typically a hourly rate) regardless of whether they win a case. Sometimes, the losing party is ordered to pay the other party’s lawyer fees on top of their own. Some lawyers also work on contingency, meaning they will take a percentage of the awarded amount only if they successfully win the case.

Before hiring a lawyer, make sure you understand their fee structure.

How do you file bankruptcy without an attorney?

It’s possible to file bankruptcy without a lawyer’s help (which is called “filing pro se”) — but consider the pros and cons before you do. The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts strongly recommends you get advice from an attorney because of the “long-term financial and legal outcomes.”

What does a bankruptcy attorney do?

Reviews for Dunedin bankruptcy attorneys
Matthew M.
If you are even considering Bankruptcy, you owe it to yourself to talk to Kevin and discuss your situation. I was almost $20,000 in debt from Credit Cards and Unsecured Loans along with my regular monthly bills and could only pay minimum payments and never get anywhere on paying them off. I called the Credit Card companies and negotiated smaller payments, looked into Debt Consolidation, and every other way I could find to lessen payments including Bankruptcy. Every other way lessens payments some but still leave you years in debt while struggling to pay your regular bills. I finally decided to talk to an Attorney about Bankruptcy and decided on Kevin due to his lower fee. It was the best move in my life at that time. Not only did Kevin answer his own phone immediately (which surprised me), he is extremely Professional and knowledgeable about Bankruptcy proceedings and will explain and guide you through every step along the way. I've called or emailed him with concerns in the evenings and on weekends and he always replied promptly, its like hes always working. Another convenient aspect is that I went through my whole process over the phone and online and Kevin takes care of all the steps to ensure everything is processed and filed properly. Just one 10 minute face to face meeting with the Court was my only interaction with "The System". Bankruptcy may not be the best option for everyone but it was the best option for me. The key is knowing all your options. I was almost $20,000 in debt barely making all my payments for years and never getting ahead. Broke on payday, never no extra money, not even really living life just existing to cover the bills. I called Kevin in June 2018 and now I'm totally out of debt, can pay the regular bills no problem, and also start saving again. If you're thinking about Bankruptcy, do yourself a favor, call Kevin Garris and put a friend in your corner.
