Literally the worst person I’ve ever dealt with. Repeatedly lied about his service and the work he did. Had a simple tile installation job. He incorrectly cut the tiles, installed them in way that was dangerous, took zero accountability and then cashed my check when I told him not to until the job was done correctly. Now he’s not answering my calls when he told me he would come back to fix the job. DO NOT USE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

Excellent ! Excellent ! Excellent ! You will never use another plumber once you've used Herb. He was patient , on time, friendly, and finished the job ! My initial request was for a new toilet valve to be installed , as with plumbing sometimes and houses built before 1990 we had many surprises along the way. Herb was the consumate professional . He worked so hard in the rain ... In the dark ... And never complained once ! He's my hero😀 I really don't have words to express my gratitude for Herbs hard work, dedication and pure tenacity ! On top of all that he's a 100% Nice Guy! Please do yourself a favor and call this guy ... You will not regret it.

I hired Ramon to do some work around my house and I must sat that I am very pleased. He did some electrical work which included changing some light fixtures, installing ceiling fans and replaced all plug-in sockets and light switch throughout my home. He was very pleasant, worked timely and neat and he didn't cost a fortune. I would definitely recommend him for hire!

"We're very happy to have found Leo and Nery for interior projects! In just three days they remodeled two large hallway closets, including demolition of a wall, installation of new doors and moldings, custom shelving, sanding, and painting. They were always punctual, informative, transparent about prices and cost of materials, and generally a pleasure to work with. We plan to hire Leo for another project soon."

I haven't had the pleasure of actually meeting Juan Carlos in person yet , my roommate was there in person but I communicated with him directly through every step! He didn't only paint my entire home (and did a great thorough job) I also hired him to paint my patio and install two new fans! He was super attentive, very sweet, helpful, responsive and reliable! Hard worker and cares a lot about making his clients happy! Will definitely hire numerous times again!

I just experienced the most phenomenal service call I have ever had! I needed to have a garbage disposal installed. Aside from the company coming to my home the same day I called, Alexandre Perez came to do the job. They were wonderful, fast, efficient and super courteous, totally took care of everything, picked up so that one would never know they were here! I am so impressed with their knowledge and workmanship. I have another job I will need done next month and I will definitely ask for GoPro Builders. They were excellent and I am so pleased that they came for this installation!

All Around Builders handled our reno of a 3,400 sq ft condo in downtown Fort Lauderdale and did an outstanding job. I am in real estate and have dealt with numerous contractors over the last 3 decades and Robert and his team are clearly top notch among them. He was tremendously flexible and able to handle all requests in a timely manner. More importantly, he used his vast experience to make suggestions that ultimately saved us money and resulted in a better product over all. We trusted his entire team and had no reservations about letting them have full access of our home even after we moved in with our 2 dogs. They were respectful of our space and diligent in the work. They were always responsive, and addressed all our concerns. They even patiently dealt with my picky wife, and always with a smile. We are very satisfied customers and would highly recommend them.

We needed a new roof because of damage from Hurricane Irma. Had 10 companies give quotes, after narrowing the list to 3 roofers, I decided on Kingdom Vision Construction and so glad we did. It was a pleasure dealing with the owner Azziz. We received a very fair price, got a first rate professionally done quality job and I would not hesitate to give them my highest recommendation.

Jeffrey and his crew are very professional There is not a tasl I ask them to do that could not be done Example: shutrters, above the ground pool, tavers drive way and porch, rebuild complete kitchen, redo garage, replace computer with windows 7 and a 55 galon fish tank. They treat you like family and you intern feel like they are family. I still have a few projects they are going to do build front porch, Put awning up over back patio. They also built a double carport for my grandson with a slicing gate. I recdommend them highly and will probably use them in the future for anything I would like have done. They created me lovely home. Also they provided me a service not usually done. No pool service would take care of my pool because it is above the ground. I am single and 67 so it is a little hard for me to do some of it. So, they agreeded to service it for me. Who better to take care of my pool then the people who built it. There service and knowlege of individual jobs was very good. Everything went well I have no complants about there work or ethicks

Onsite Project Solutions turned a house into "our home" for my son and I. All rooms were painted, all new baseboards, trim and interior doors were installed, doors were relocated, new built in closet systems installed and the BEST part is my new whole home concrete floor that reminds me of the beach! That was all completed Spring of 2015 and now they are back to create a very modern, custom concrete bathroom!

We hired John and his team to come do a small bathroom and kitchen remodel for our home in Miami Shores. They were very patient with us as we went through the building and permitting process, dealing with the city, guided us through all the inspections and various changes we wanted to make last minute. We were very please with the results and I wouldn't hesitate to hire them again. We actually called them back to come install our new fence not to long ago and john and his men did a great job. I would recommend them to friends and family.

Had 2 exterior doors painted. Not the cleanest of paint lines, got some paint on the outer edge of stucco, around door trim and had to come back next day to correct. Not a professional job by any means, satisfactory.I provided all materials, paint included. Did not clean the brushes I provided and hadbto throw tem away.

We had a great experience working with JCS construction. They were professional and easy to work, not something I would expect for a construction job! We used them on several projects after our flooring was damaged from hurricane Irma. They installed our Bona hard wood laminate (our home was half carpeted and half tile) and a replaced our base boards. We also renovated our master bathroom by updating our shower, removing the dated tub and replacing the vanity to an upgraded double sink vanity. It was a fun project to work on, I was able to choose the flooring, hardware and details in the bathroom to my exact specifications, and when something would not work, Jonathan was open about alternatives. My family and I are very pleased with the outcome. JCS construction comes highly recommended.

So far the work has been great! Luis has helped us install new baseboards for our entire house. He also helped us demolish a structure. Lastly, he helped us smooth out plaster for the outside of the house. All the work has been done in a timely manner with great communication. I greatly recommend. We are also having him work on other projects for the future such as installing new windows.:)

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
