We met Jorge Perez (The "JP" in JPMASSI",) in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, to provide us an Estimate on the roof replacement. He is cordial and my wife was impressed with his knowledge and patience in explaining the work. As a New Yorker, I am generally skeptical of people specially when there is a great deal of money involved. Jorge quickly dispelled that (Healthy) skepticism and although his bid was competitive and it was not the lowest we are glad we chose his company for the repair. His crew are truly professionals and had the roof done inside of a week. They are meticulous about their work and cleanliness. We highly recommend JPMASSI for your roof repair! Odetta C & Gerry H

Ryan and his team at Sea of Green have been doing my lawn for 2 months now and I could not be more pleased. I had two other companies doing my lawn prior to finally finding Sea of Green, and both were not even close to the service, professionalism and reliability. I would highly recommend them. One example of the "little" things that they do that the others did not: we have a screened in pool in our yard and they take the time to only mow in one direction so that they do not throw any cuttings towards the pool. With our old lawn services, we had a lot of tiny grass clippings floating in our pool after each trim. They are ALWAYS here on the day I expect them to cut as well. I truly can't think of anything they could improve.

We are very pleased with Paul's repair of three doors in our house in Key West, Fl. He was very efficient and was able to complete the job in 6.5 hours. I was impressed by his efficiency, creativity. and carpentry skills. And I also felt that he was offered a permanent, not temporary, solutions. He was on-time and only charged us for the time that he worked. We will hire him again.

We can't say enough about how awesome David Christian is. He worked diligently to complete a new metal roof on our home - and it looks FABULOUS!! He is such a hard worker and knows so much about many house projects. He is dependable and honest and went out of his way to work around our schedule to make things happen. (He even came out to put up a weather vane on our boat house as a surprise birthday present for my husband on a VERY WINDY day!) I can't say enough about how awesome his work is and what a great handyman he is - (did I mention his prices are about as reasonable as they come?) Highly recommend him for any house project. :)

Gift Shop at Parrish Medical Center. We had a remodeling going on and had to push their appointment to Saturday morning. They arrived on time and did a superb job despite the need to work around contractors finishing up their work. They cleaned our windows inside and out along with 18 glass shelves hanging in the windows plus many other glass display shelves located throughout the shop. We offered to pay them extra for the Saturday work but they would not think of it, I highly recommend this company! Michael Van Heusen President, Parrish Medical Center Auxiliary

Mr. Tingley helped me to build a 3D wall in my living room, and it only took him about 5-6 hours. He was on-time, courteous, and efficient. Went way above what was expected of him and even helped me to return some blinds at home depot that didn't fit in a window. I would and will be hiring him again for further handy man issues in any of our homes.....ESPECIALLY PAINTING!!!! Awesome job!

Darwin installed about 550 linear feet of baseboard at my home. He did pickup, install, caulking and painting. I bought the boards, paint and caulk. The job was completed in 2 days by his team of 3, which included him. He was very receptive to my requests and questions. We walked the house before I paid him to make sure I was happy with everything.

I hired JP to replace an attic stairway. At the time I didn't know it would not be a typical install since it was built into the roof. He came out and optimistically said he could handle it. To my surprise he was able to install the new ladder with a little extra effort! JP is a very friendly guy and he charged me far less then any other bid I'd received. Thanks JP!

AAA Prime Window and Doors procured and installed new exterior doors for our home. We are 100% satisfied with the service we have gotten. Kenneth Childs, the owner of the company, provided personalized service that was responsive and expert. Ken always responded quickly by email or phone answering all of our questions. The installation of the doors was difficult because we have an older home. But AAA Prime Window and Doors did a beautiful job with all aspects of the installation, completing the work in 1 day by working 10 hours. We highly, highly recommend this windows and doors company.

Newley and his crew renovated two bathrooms in my historic home. I feel like I won the lottery when I chose CN Romack Inc. They were professional, prompt, and thorough. I found them to be informative, imaginative, great listeners, and superior craftsmen. Inevitable delays never felt like a burden, and communication was never an issue. The job included refinishing and moving a claw foot tub, electrical and plumbing, installing floor, shower and wall tile, ripping out and replacing woodwork and trim. Fabulous from beginning to end and I recommend their team without reservation.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
