Joe F. says, "Needed help installing outdoor lighting around the garage at our home here in Palm Coast, FL. Glenn and Melissa were super flexible to come for a same day estimate and offered 3 expert solutions on how the garage door lights could be setup. After Glenn educated us on the pros and cons we elected for a mechanical timer (with a manual switch inside the box) rather than a typical wall switch so that the 3 exterior coach lights will turn ON at dusk and OFF at dawn WITHOUT needing a photocell (dusk-to-dawn feature). Great solution really and he showed us how to adjust the ON / OFF times with the changing of the seasons in the timer box in seconds. On install day (just 2 days later) Glenn and JD arrived right on time and were true professionals. Glenn a veteran and master electrician showed his mastery of his craft with on-the-fly custom adaptations. They went above and beyond to explain why they were making certain choices and cut no corners. Sincerely detail oriented such as on the 2nd garage light: the opening to drill through the stucco / block from the exterior into the garage was approximately 3” wide. Glenn arrived with a specific narrow box to fit JUST RIGHT and drilled through perfectly at a 15 degree angle (I only know because he patiently explained). They even masterfully worked the metal conduit to have two different bends with the last at 30 degrees so the main “stem” could be anchored to the block and still meet the ceiling 2 to 3” off the exterior wall going into the attic. Once the lights were being mounted Glenn was a pro not settling for a tiny gap around the fixture and instead flush mounting the lights for the best result. Perhaps the most impressive part was that I texted their business phone this evening at 9 pm reporting a minor glitch with the timer - even though the lights themselves worked with the manual switch. I GOT A CALL BACK MINUTES LATER ON A SUNDAY NIGHT AT 9:05 PM with Glenn doing a 90 second troubleshoot and giving his word that if not resolved not to worry he’d be replacing the timer asap. 5-stars. Professionalism is priceless."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

If you plan on hiring a professional electrician to install an outlet, expect to pay $75 to $500, or an average of $210. But for an accurate cost estimate, you need to contact a few electrical outlet installers near you.

The light switch and outlet types may impact your cost. The location of the outlet also matters, as the electrician may have to route additional wiring and may not have access to existing wiring. If you need the outlet childproofed, this may also cost more.

Read our cost guide, “How much do switch and outlet installation cost?

Generally, this is a job best left to a licensed professional. A licensed electrician will be able to install your outlet using the most up-to-date code practices. If you need any permits to perform the install, the electrician should also be able to obtain them for you.

Depending on where you live, you likely need a permit to install GFCI outlets. When in doubt, get in contact with your local government, and ask a licensed electrician to perform your electrical work.
