Juan, the GC, seemed great at first — very communicative and even promised to hang a chandelier for me as a thoughtful “welcome home” gift. Unfortunately, once hired, it quickly became clear that his word could not be trusted. The job was supposed to take two days: closing in a loft and adding a door. We paid $6,000 (a premium, but we wanted quality work). Instead, his crew caused extensive damage to my home and left us with a poorly executed, incomplete project. On the first day, framing damaged my railings and finished areas. Mudding was done carelessly, splattering all over my baseboards, walls, carpet, and furniture — none of which were properly covered. My stairs and carpets were ruined from workers tracking mud and dirt through my home. When I raised concerns, the response was dismissive: “it’s water-soluble, just scrub it out.” Day two? Nobody showed up, blaming “drying time” — something any professional would know and plan for. Day three? They arrived after 11pm without notice. There was no English-speaking foreman, and the crew tried to leave without completing finish work and were called back in over 3 times by me requesting they complete the finishing. Despite paying an additional $500 for painting, the room was left with sloppy cut lines, unfinished trim, light switches painted over, gobs of spackle left on walls, mirrors, and furniture, and holes unpatched in the ceiling. Even worse, the baseboards were left unfinished and we had to demand they go purchase what they did not measure out properly and complete. We had to repeatedly call the crew back and they were dismissive and annoyed we would suggest they complete the job properly. What they installed didn’t even match the existing trim. When this was pointed out, Juan brushed it off, saying he had “put in the scope of work that it might not match.” Really? Did you even try to match it, or did your crew just slap up whatever they could find at the last minute? We spent two full days after they left fixing mistakes, cleaning up damage, and finishing what his team abandoned. As for the chandelier he promised to hang, Juan later claimed it required an electrician and said he’d send one the next day — but that day came and went with no follow-up. He has since ghosted me completely. Juan himself admitted this was a “small job they don’t normally do” — but if that’s the case, why take it on and charge a premium? Worse, he knew we had much larger projects in the pipeline, but instead of doing right by us, he walked away from responsibility. Bottom line: Juan is unreliable, dismissive, and untrustworthy. As a GC, you better have a foreman and come out and make sure the jos you are allowing under YOUR GC LICENSE are done properly. I do believe his father-in -law was here for a short time but left early and left three gentlemen here who lacked skills, could not communicate and laughed at us when we attempted to tell them what they needed to fix. If he can’t handle something as simple as closing off a loft, imagine the disaster he’d create on a large-scale project. I gave him every chance to make this right, waiting days to hear back from him — and he chose to disappear. The photos of the aftermath speak for themselves. In closing,I paid him in full to move on and I will be hiring a third party to come out and do the finish work I have not been able to clean up. Shame on you Juan! And who gives up two huge projects because you didn't want to do a small one correctly? Not a very good business man!
