Introduction: I believe that my work stands out from others because I really tailor my approach to the student. Some students have time to practice a lot while others don't, and I believe you need to teach differently based on which category your student falls into. I also really try to have my students take ownership of their musicianship; the goal of teaching is to teach your students how to be independent, so I constantly strive to make sure my students know how to do their own problem solving. This leads to discussion-oriented lessons, where student and teacher freely exchange ideas, and this is where I believe true learning takes place. My favorite part of teaching piano is the joy my students experience when they achieve something they previously thought was impossible. There's no doubt that playing the piano is a challenging thing to do, which makes it even more satisfying to see when a student overcomes some type of obstacle.

Robert is an excellent teacher. I am a 70 year old who was returning to the piano after 10 years of lessons as a child. Over the years I had tried two other piano teachers who did nothing but assign pieces, suggest I practice more, and then assign more pieces. Robert started with pieces I was working on already and then chose others that would offer a variety of new skills. We continued to work on all of the pieces as he refined his teaching to include new skills. Robert has different ways to approach the piano, depending on each student. He let me set the pace for lessons, was always positive and encouraging, and was very patient. I wish I had the technical vocabulary to list everything I learned, but I would highly recommend him for adults and children. We laughed a lot and I, at least, enjoyed every lesson. Sally

Robert was an excellent teacher and was always prepared with a lesson plan tailored to my needs. He is clearly passionate about what he teaches and loves to share what he knows with others.

I studied piano with Robert in Kalamazoo, Michigan a few years back. When he emailed me this week and asked for a review I was more than happy to do so! Lessons with Robert were great for me: since I was entirely "self-taught" when we started working together, he taught me a lot about how to relax and play more comfortably. He also had really intuitive approaches for reading music and teaching music theory, which is a skill that helped with my self-taught guitar playing too. I can honestly say that I enjoy the piano more than ever before to this day because of the engaging lessons I had with Robert. A great piano teacher that I will always recommend!

My daughter took piano lessons from Robert for about eighteen months. He came to our home every week for lessons and not only did I get to see how much my daughter progressed, I also saw how patient and encouraging he was. While my daughter didn't always dedicate enough time to practicing, Robert worked with what she put into her lesson that week and built upon it. He was never too strict about practicing. He was more about making sure she understood what she was doing so she would enjoy playing. Thanks Robert! Matt
