Mister Clean-Up did a fantastic job. Was there all day and really worked his tail off. At one point, after being there for 10 1/2 hours, he ran out of bleach with only a small section of the driveway to complete. I would expect many contractors to bail at that point, but he emphatically said "if I'm going to do it I'm doing it right." At that point I had to head out for the night (it was 8:30pm), but I felt comfortable leaving him there alone to finish the job. The places he cleaned look fantastic. I loved sitting in my backyard the next day just looking around and enjoying the clean view. I would hire Luciano again in a heartbeat.

I was referred to this company years ago by a friend because I needed a hole patched in my ceiling and they did and excellent job. A few years later I got ready to finish my basement so I called them back. I needed framing, drywall and plumbing. Todd came out and helped me design a layout that not only looked great but also maximized the living space. Todd and his crew did all the framing, drywall including ceilings and he setup plumbers to rough in the bathroom, kitchen and laundry room. I recommend Todd and Residential Drywall Inc. anytime I have the opportunity because they do quality work that speaks for itself, they are very professional, always on time, trustworthy and have great pricing as well.

We hired the TNT crew to handle the restoration and remodeling of our kitchen and living area — that included framing and installing a new window, installing glass tile backsplash, installation of all the appliances and fixtures, 3 replacement doors, new sink fixtures and plumbing and painting. I couldn't be more pleased with the whole experience. The team felt like they really cared and were very flexible and professional.

As an engineer we have a saying that goes "good, fast, cheap; pick two). We got pushed back a little further than originally anticipating but as I worked in construction and weather it was understandable. They were BY FAR the lowest price on architectural shingles and lower with this price than all but one or two who quoted 3-tab shingles. I didn't see any nails on the ground after the job and Ray told us we could load any trash besides paint and something else before the trash company picked up the container a couple days later. They pay per pound as that's the only way I've ever found plus haul and deliver and maybe number of days. Ray was easy to work with and I know we had some plywood sheets replaced. Cover your stuff in the attic as there was a mess up there which I should of anticipated as he said he replaced several sheets. There were nail penetrations in the attic roof (quite a few) which I could bend sideways with a hammer. I'm not stating that last part to complain but more so as a courtesy to the business for future clients. We feel we got much more than we paid for which is VERY rare when dealing with contractors. If you want super pretty attic ceailing it will cost you and the competitors who bid a lot more didn't guarantee it to us except one who did use a better pad but was also a grand and a half less than TWICE what The Art of Home Improvement charged. I would recommend to my family members and friends in a second (unless they want a metal roof which I don't know if they do or not.)

I accepted Wes’ estimate because he came in lower than everyone else and his reviews and pix were great. Unfortunately, I had to back out of our talks because my dad (who’s a contractor) ended up doing the work for me.

Inmer was a pleasure to work with. His carpentry is very high quality and I can tell his work is built to last. A primary goal of my project was making my deck safe and Inmer delivered. I have hesitation letting my young daughter move around freely. What separates Inmer from other contractors I've worked with was his creativity. My project was a deck rehab, not a new build. That meant he had to work around existing structure and solve problems on the fly. His solutions were smart, safe, and efficient. Finally, Inmer had great communication. He was proactive with his calls and texts. He responded quickly when I had questions, and set very clear and reasonable expectations for the project. I can easily say he was one of the easiest contractors I've ever worked with in terms of planning and logistics. I typically like to provide some constructive criticism when I write reviews to make them useful to other buyers, but I am struggling to come up with anything for Inmer. Bottom line, I can very confidently recommend Inmer and his company.

I called Eric initially to change a chandelier in my dining room which he did for a great price and came out great. I inquired about recessed lighting in my family room and his price was literally almost half of what another contractor quoted me. Eric came back and installed 6 recessed lights with LED trims and even installed a dimmer for me for no extra charge. He is very clean and even though he had to cut holes in the wall to run wiring when he finished there wasn't dust all over the place and the wall looked the same as before. I will definetly be bringing Eric back for some more household projects in the future starting with updating my kitchen backsplash.

Our experience overall with this company was outstanding! The contractor was on time with his estimate did not overcharge and actually was way more professional than any other company I have had to deal with in the past for my other projects. The finishing is impressive and the respect that they have for you is what makes me want to recommend them to anyone else! I will definitely use McCown Family Works again!

We've hired Boss Contracting for 2 projects now, and we are planning out more with THIS company in mind. We full-heartedly support and recommend such a stellar business as BOSS Contracting. Vernon has a very extensive background in so many subjects regarding his work: we've had kitchen work; cabinet work; bannister repairs and more. A big plus about this company is that Vernon can help you think through what you want so that it adds value and pleasure to the work. We didn't realize how needed and helpful this was in contracting work until we met him and had realized just how little contractors actually help you to prepare for something you might know little about. And the quality of work was bar-NONE for the price! Go with BOSS Contracting, you won't be disappointed!

I hired Extreme Earthworks in September 2016 to do a major grading project on my farm, which included clearing 3 acres of land, grading that entire area to make it flat, and creating a new driveway to that section of the property where I am planning on building my new house. The work was completed flawlessly, and Ken went above and beyond to make everything perfect. When he finished, I needed a few other things done, and he was happy to accommodate all of my requests. I have hired many other contractors over the years, but I can honestly say that I have never been as happy with any of them as I was/am with Extreme Earthworks. I would highly recommend them for anything you need.

Neighbors Home Remodeling designed and finished our basement. The design process was better than we expected and we were able to make changes throughout the design phase. Walter Lewis provided 3D layouts of the space enabling us to easily visualize how the finished product would look. Neighbors Home Remodeling managed the framing and finishing phases of the project very professionally. Walter keep us informed on a daily basis and demonstrated a true sense of pride and ownership for the work. He selected and supervised quality subcontractors. The work area was cleaned daily and the workers were courteous and respectful. Neighbors Home Remodeling provided a detailed budget and schedule up-front and stayed within budget and on schedule. We are very pleased with the results and recommend Neighbors Home Remodeling.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
