Ted and Eddie were great to work with! My husband and I put our request on Thumbtack, not sure if anyone would be willing to help because it was a complicated door installation with HVAC concerns. Ted replied back to our request immediately, talked through our ideas and needs, and visited our house to go over options, such as timeline, costs, and door/hallway details. My husband and I felt at ease knowing Ted could help us out. Our request was a one to two-man project, and Ted brought his buddy, Eddie, who did a phenomenal job of installing the doors and building a doorway. Eddie's work was smooth and top notch.

WRIII (Tre') did a fantastic job "saving" my ceiling in my garage. The spackling (stippling) has been falling off for a while, and eventually the tape and seams were falling down as well. Some of the dry wall was sagging too, and I thought we would have to completely replace the entire ceiling in the garage. After Tre' took a look, he recommended scraping the remainder of the stipple and tape off, sealing the entire surface with an oil based primer / sealer, using sheetrock screws to pull the low hanging sheetrock back into place, retaping and mudding and then re-stippling. That was a way more affordable solution than replacing, and once he completed the job, `it looks absolutely amazing. It looks brand new. Tre' did an outstanding job for a fair price, and got the work done faster than I expected. He was extremely particular (a perfectionist) and his work isn't done until he is satisfied, I highly recommend WRIII to anyone needing drywall work, or painting.

Kenneth Washington repaired damage to the roof of my home in February 2015. He repaired damaged parts of the roof, removed the old shingles and replaced them with new, repaired and repainted the plaster walls and ceiling of an interior bedroom which leaked due to the initial roof damage. He also replaced the roof of the outdoor storage shed. Kenneth helped me understand his process, how long it would take and how much it would cost. He allowed me to accompany him to the local hardware store to pick up materials. I believe the entire project took two weeks. Everything went well, even when the added cost of repairing small sections of the wood foundation of the roof arose unexpectedly. He and his team worked quickly and professionally. The finished product was a top-notch job that I am pleased with. My yard was cleaned of the debris after the materials were removed. I recommend Paint Pros Plus anytime I hear someone with home improvement projects.

Jim Hilliker was AMAZING. Patient, flexible, went way above and beyond....while he was here working on the original project, I had a refrigerator delivered that would not fit in the cubby in my kitchen. He came to the rescue, did some magic carpentry and was able to fix things so I did not have to send the refrigerator back! Also an attic ladder cracked while he was here and he repaired it to the point where it was way sturdier than it had been to begin with. He was kind and friendly, did superb work and all of his assistants were great as well. Could not possible recommend this group any more highly. LOVED them!

Tony Green (dba Simple Touch) did an outstanding job painting the inside of my house. He repaired any defects in the walls (and painted all of them), sealed any trim problems (painted all trim) and painted the ceilings. This was quality work professionally done at a very good price. Let him know what your ideas are and he will do it right. I will use Tony again for future projects and that says a lot these days about the people you hire to do work for you in your home.

Greg has completed many jobs at my house. First he remodeled our three room apartment downstairs. This included installing a shower, painting, installing lighting fixtures, mountilng cabinets and painting them. He also takes care of our grounds. We have about 3-4 acres and his ground keeping skills are impeccable.

I had Elite replace some water damaged flooring in my downstairs powder room, living room and hallway. The crew was very polite, worked quick and was knowledgeable. Everything went extremely well with the repairs except for a couple minor details on finished molding, which they quickly returned to rectify. Overall, I was very pleased with the work and communication. I wouldn't hesitate to hire them again.

Lamar came to our home to install a 27' round above pool. We had three previous quotes and Lamars was by far the most reasonable. The job did take 3 days but that was due to the weather. He was very prompt, very reliable, very polite and definitely knew what he was doing. We were definitely very happy with his work and would use him again.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
