- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Now that you have made the decision to further develop a career in the entertainment industry as a vocalist, you want to be sure to invest wisely in quality vocal training. Selecting the right voice instructor and/or vocal coach for you is a very important step in the right direction. To help you define your search, first, understand the definitions of a Voice Instructor and a Vocal Coach, as they are different: A Voice Instructor is an instructor who teaches how to sing and how to sing properly. An instructor focuses on giving the student a foundation of learning vocal technique, establishing breath coordination, and to learn how to create healthy sounds. She/he designs breathing and vocal exercises for study to allow flexibility in the voice, to increase vocal range, develop stamina, and to train the musical ear. A skilled voice instructor is able to introduce, explain, and foster concepts of vocal study for all levels, beginning to advanced, and can offer teachings that can be applied to any genre of music. A Vocal Coach is an advisor who focuses on the vocal performance and working on shaping the overall sound of a vocalist. A Vocal Coach may specialize in certain genres and different aspects of performance, for instance, an Opera Coach is different from a Musical Theatre Coach, or a Coach for Contemporary Music (i.e. Jazz, Pop, R&B, Gospel Soul, etc.). A Vocal Coach will advise on how to express lyrics, suggest keys or song selections to cover, and direct the vocalist to explore his/her range in a song. For popular music, a Coach may help the vocalist define his/her vocal style that enhances his/her strongest attributes. For artists, this could be developing a brand of the vocalist based on defining his/her signature sound. In your history of prior vocal study or if you are just starting your search, you may come across those that are only voice instructors, those that are just coaches or those that offer both in their studio. Keep in mind, a lot of professionals in the music industry naturally pose as coaches having worked around or listened to many vocalists, so know what your needs are, and if you need both technique as well as coaching, searching for one that can offer both would make the most sense. There are many voice instructors and vocal coaches out there well-equipped to train vocalists; as you search for location, rates, and availability, follow this link to view additional tips to help you find the right match:
