Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: I feel deeply grateful to be able to do this. If you’ve not been self-employed, it might seem like an attractive lifestyle with a lot of freedom and many options available as to how much to work, when to work, and what to work on…which is basically true, in my opinion. BUT, the price of that freedom is that you must be competent not only in your field, but also good at bookkeeping, marketing, communicating with clients, organizing work, setting priorities, sweeping floors, taking inventory, photography and cleaning toilets. While I wouldn’t say I ‘dislike’ any of it, obviously I prefer some duties over others. I’ve worked harder and longer in working for myself than in any job I’ve ever held…by a long shot. Occasionally, it gets overwhelming but I’d have it no other way.

Michael Sebacher made THE MOST beautiful iron bed for me last year, there is none other like it to be found and everyone who sees it loves it! He also made me a giant metal wall art piece that hangs in my reception area. His ability to design and create surpassed my expectations ! I would encourage anyone to have a look at his website and if you are wanting something unique and gorgeous he is the BEST!!!

Being an Art Major myself I'm always looking forward to working with new mediums and techniques that I haven't tried, one of which is stained glass! This is how I met Mike, he was teaching a class in stained glass. Mike is an outstanding teacher, better then most I had in college. I truly enjoyed his small workshop/class and the end result of my project. I also had the pleasure of viewing more of Mikes works and was in awe, he's an amazing artist and blacksmith!! I don't believe there isn't anything he can't do once he sets his mind to it, the end results will be phenomenal.

Michael made me a unique, self-designed, modern version of an "Ulu" - a knife native to northwestern North America. It is both aesthetically beautiful and very useful in a modern kitchen - great for cutting everything from nuts to meat to pizza. I LOVE it!

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

in 1997, I was working for Gulfstream Aerospace in Savannah as a Corporate Trainer as my first job after grad school (Univ of Michigan!). I had bought a huge, very old, very beautiful, house that needed a lot of love. I made my own steel garden fence because I didn’t see any reason not to. I’ve never been one to let my own ignorance stop me when it comes to trying to make things with my hands and I deeply love to learn. That’s when working with steel captured my heart and mind forever. I firmly believe we’re all artists, every one of us. The urge to create things is a primal drive we’re all born with. Different occupations offer different levels of opportunity to apply our creative instincts. Unfortunately, those expressive opportunities seem to be diminishing as time goes on. For me, art is the only domain in which this type of life is possible. Managing to remain an artist despite all the demands society makes on us to be conventional, to conform and play by the rules, is a major accomplishment for anyone…just ask the next dedicated artist you meet.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Hiring an artist, if you’ve not done it before, can be a little different. You may have a very specific idea of what you want. If that’s the case, try to have sketches or dimensions or images ready. If your project is less defined, be prepared to answer questions about location, function or price range. The more specific you can be, the more likely you are to get an accurate estimate. If the project needs definition, it may take some discussion. My estimates include time for design, fabrication, finishing, and installation as required. The goal is to make the client comfortable with the plan before work begins.
