10 reasons why your washing machine isn’t spinning

No luck finding those guidelines? Below are 10 potential reasons your washer isn’t spinning correctly, or at all. The issues apply to both top- and front-loading washers unless stated otherwise.
1. Power supply problems
Washing machines need a stable power supply to work correctly. Make sure your washer is properly plugged in. Test the extension cord if you’re using one, and look for tripped circuit breakers.
How to fix: Restore the power supply, and your machine should start spinning again.
2. Door or lid lock problems
The door and lid lock mechanisms on both front- and top-loading washers need to be securely in place for the machine to spin correctly. After checking the machine’s power supply, this should be your second place to look.
How to fix: If it’s simply a matter of closing the door or lid securely, you can DIY. If the lock mechanisms are faulty or broken, it’s best to hire a professional to fix or replace the lock.
3. Unbalanced load
Top- and front-loaders have mechanisms that can detect when a load becomes imbalanced. When the washer detects an unbalance that might damage the machine, it won’t spin properly, or at all.
How to fix: Evenly redistribute the load, and the washer should spin again.
4. Clogged or faulty drain pipe
This was the reason my machine stopped spinning. I followed the manual’s instructions and examined the drain pump filter. Inside, I discovered a paper clip, a hair tie and a piece of a cufflink. Once I removed those, the machine started spinning again.
How to fix: You can probably remove debris from a clogged filter or pipe on your own. However, if the drain pump filter or pipe is faulty, it’s best to seek a professional’s help. They may need to replace it.
5. Broken timer
A broken timer is another simple yet frustrating reason some machines stop spinning. When a timer is faulty, the washer won’t switch from one cycle to the next, for example, from the wash cycle to the spin cycle.
How to fix: You should hire a pro to help you source, order and install the correct part.
6. Drive belt problems
Top loaders rely on a drive belt to make the drum of the washing machine spin. If the belt is faulty or comes off mid-cycle, the drum won’t spin.
How to fix: Unless you have a lot of experience and know how to replace the drive belt, it’s better to hire a local appliance repair technician.
7. Motor problems
If your washer’s motor is faulty or broken, it’s likely your machine’s drum might agitate, or turn, but not spin. Luckily, there are easy ways to test the motor for most models. Read the owner’s manual to see whether testing the motor for your particular washer is an option.
How to fix: A professional should repair or replace the motor.
8. Control board malfunctions
Control board malfunctions mainly apply to newer models that have electronic control boards. A faulty control board can be why your washing machine won’t spin or work properly.
How to fix: You should hire a professional to assess and fix or replace the control board.
9. Faulty clutch assembly in top-loading washers
The engage-and-disengage spinning action of top loaders requires a working clutch assembly. If the clutch assembly is faulty, the barrel will have difficulty agitating and spinning.
How to fix: Hire a professional repair technician to repair or replace the clutch. The last thing you want to do is add to the repair cost by causing more damage.
10. Malfunctioning drive motor coupling in top loaders
Top loaders have a drive motor coupling that connects the motor and the transmission. The coupling may wear away or break, in which case your machine will stop spinning.
How to fix: Again, it’s better to ask a professional to help replace the coupling and get the machine spinning again.
