Introduction: I am a former Washington Sate apple farmer who is now a licensed professional specializing in fumigating pocket gophers (often called moles). I use a method common in the Eastern Washington orchard industry. The substance I use is phosphine gas, which is heavier than air and stays down in the tunnels of the rodent. The gas dissipates in 24 hours and doesn't stay in the body of the rodent, should one die above ground. Unlike all poison baits, which stay in the rodent's body, causing "off-target kills", rodents that are killed by my method are not toxic, should a pet get them. Rarely do they die above ground. In infested fields, I can often reduce the rodent population by 90% with one treatment. Small isolated areas of them are often 100% with one application. I work the whole Idaho Panhandle and Eastern Washington. Up to 100 miles from my home, I charge $30 travel fee and $70 per hour. After 100 miles, I charge $50 travel fee and $80 per hour. Fumigation is the best way to very quickly reduce your tunneling rodent population a great deal. I do not fumigate ground squirrels, voles, ground hogs or anything but pocket gophers.
