I founded Abigail Schmitz Law to provide strategic legal solutions and protect clients from common legal pitfalls in today’s heavily litigated society. My experience spans top law firms and in-house counsel for a private equity fund, where I built a strong foundation in corporate transactions, commercial litigation, and employment law. While I continue to focus on these areas, my practice has expanded to include real estate disputes, entertainment law, family law, and criminal defense.
Originally from Charleston, Illinois, I grew up in a household dedicated to academics and athletics—my father was a Division I baseball coach at Eastern Illinois University for 22 years, and my mother was a professor and director in the business college. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Finance and Bachelor of Arts in Language Studies (Spanish & French focus) from Indiana State University, followed by my law degree from the University of Illinois College of Law in 2014.
I am also a graduate and member of the Justice Entrepreneurs Project, a small firm incubator program of the Chicago Bar Foundation, which supports innovative, community-driven legal practices.
Beyond my legal practice, I am an adjunct professor at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Law, where I mentor and teach the next generation of legal professionals. I also speak conversational Spanish and French.

Abigail was patient. The only attorney willing to hear the full story and TRY to come up with a solution. She asked questions to better understand my situation and she was helpful with explaining why I had been having a hard time finding an attorney to begin with. When it comes to legal advice, Abigail is the one you want in your corner. She is incredibly intelligent, professional, and more than capable of handling any legal scenario you throw at her. Her attention to detail will ensure that all legal needs you have are met with a knowledgeable, attentive, and meticulous approach.
Abigail’s empathy knows no bounds, when it comes to her clients. When you first meet her, you will not feel as if you have shaken hands with a pit viper looking for the quickest approach to the first offer on the table. She is friendly and kind with a hometown friendliness not easily found in the city.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My pricing is flexible and project/case dependent. I am happy to work with clients to find the right pricing structure for any matter.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I recommend an initial consultation with any new client to discuss their matter and decide whether I am a good fit. If I am a good fit, then we discuss a reasonable pricing structure and execute an engagement agreement prior to me working on the matter. If we decide that I am not a good fit, I have a huge network of lawyers in the Chicagoland area that I am happy to refer you to.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I received my bachelor's degree in finance and language studies from Indiana State University in 2011 and my J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law in 2014. I have worked at big and midsize law firms and as in-house counsel for private equity funds giving me a wide range of experience.
