Hired on Thumbtack

Hired on Thumbtack

I don't know how to even begin to describe the nightmare we went through with the Furniture Doctor Shop. We hired David to refinish a expensive oak kitchen table with 3 leaves, a cabinet and hutch piece, and 6 chairs. In interviewing David, who by the way is a very pleasant salesman, he assured us that he had done several projects in an antique white, distressed finish. He says that he guarantees his work to 100% satisfaction so what can go wrong, so let's give him a try. The cabinet and the hutch were the 1st completed pieces, looked fine. Until I put my dishware back into it and the paint all came off. He apologized and said he had new help, but later confessed that he forgot to put the polyurethane finish on the inside. He then asked if he could do it in my home instead of taking it back to the shop. After a week of smelling polyurethane I could use my cabinet. Oh, he painted over the cork door stops instead of removing them, but no worries, they later just fell off. As for the kitchen table, all was well until I looked at my leaves and found he just stained the tops. The bottoms were cover in drips and streaks of stain. When I questioned David on it, he replied, "nobody will see the bottoms." EXCEPT ME! As for the chairs, I am still crying and still haven't gotten them back after having to send them back 3 times. The upholstery job is deplorable. When David first brought 3 of the chairs back, I ran my hand across the back of the chair because the material was all bunched up, when it should be smooth and I cut myself on a tack that was protruding through the back of the material. He took that chair back after a list of excuses on how it happened. The next day at our holiday party my guest felt he had to apologize to me for the buttons on the upholstered chair popped off and were laying on the floor. Three days later David brought back. David then brought the other 3 chairs back, dropped them in my foyer, came into the kitchen to collect payment for the chairs. I told him I would check out the chairs first, and while on crutches I went into the foyer and brought the chairs into the kitchen where I could see them. My husband noticed a 3 inch screw sticking out of the bottom of the chair back, David again apologized. As I ran my hand over the material on the back of one of the chairs, the entire back fell off onto the floor. By this time I was enraged and thought he was playing a twisted joke on us. He left with the 3 chairs and I have not yet heard back from him. This has been going on since the beginning of October. BUYER BEWARE! Claudia Levin Island Lake, Illinois
Furniture Doctor Shop's reply
On August 13, 2015 Ms. Levin and I "The Furniutre Doctor Shop" appeared in court and it was ruled that the Furniture Doctor Shop is without guilt and Ms. Levin owes the balance of the contract to the Furniture Doctor Shop. The statements made in her letter are not to be trusted. They are mostly false and not a true discription of events. I have requested Thumbtack to remove her letter and was informed that I would have to take them to court to have it removed. They'er a good company with a good product but they got this one wrong. For over 16 years the Furniture Doctor Shop has exsisted as a store and shop serving over 300 clients a year. We do great work and if something is not right we make it right, and fast.
