Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: I have a distinct sense of humor and style that separates me from others in my field. My sense of humor has an edge to it that is appropriate for kids, but also can be appreciated by adults, which makes my art very versatile. Also, unlike many artists today, I also feel extremely comfortable working traditionally without the aid of computers, which lends my art a warmer feel and a more personal touch. However, I am not opposed to working digitally, but I find it helpful that I can do both. I have also been exploring illustration through embroidery, and I find that it's a skill that not many illustrators have. It allows me to take a very traditional artform, and apply it to contemporary styles of drawing, which creates a really nice contrast and is very visually interesting. It's super fun too! Being a freelance illustrator allows me to take on different jobs and ideas that I probably never would have done otherwise, and it keeps things interesting. I've done logo designs, book illustrations, blog illustrations and t-shirt designs, most of which are a far cry from my personal preference for children's book illustration, but they were really fun to do regardless. Overall, it's the drawing that makes it fun. It's something I've always enjoyed doing and even when it doesn't go quite according to plan, more often than not it's relaxing and comforting. I also enjoy coming up with different layouts and designs for whatever job I get.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Mostly what I do is I factor in the cost of supplies, time spent on communication, drawing out thumbnails and ideas, drawing/coloring the actual product, revisions, the customer's budget, etc. Something like a small book will cost a lot more than a quick drawing for a blog, for example. It really depends mostly on the project and what's being done.

  • Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I illustrated a children's book called 'The Hanger Family', written by a self-published author. It was a long process, but the final product was well worth the time.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Most illustrators have a website with a portfolio that showcases their professional work. A lot of times, you can check out their style by looking through their portfolio, and you can see if they're the right person for the job. However, it helps to look through a variety of their work and not just one or two pictures, because some illustrators can alter their styles to suit the needs of different jobs. For example, my professional website has my highly rendered, clean-cut work on it, but I also have a blog that features very loose, quick, concept-based art. The styles vary tremendously between the two websites, so depending on what you're looking for, it might help you to check both sites out.
