FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Mostly what I do is I factor in the cost of supplies, time spent on communication, drawing out thumbnails and ideas, drawing/coloring the actual product, revisions, the customer's budget, etc. Something like a small book will cost a lot more than a quick drawing for a blog, for example. It really depends mostly on the project and what's being done.
- Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I illustrated a children's book called 'The Hanger Family', written by a self-published author. It was a long process, but the final product was well worth the time.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Most illustrators have a website with a portfolio that showcases their professional work. A lot of times, you can check out their style by looking through their portfolio, and you can see if they're the right person for the job. However, it helps to look through a variety of their work and not just one or two pictures, because some illustrators can alter their styles to suit the needs of different jobs. For example, my professional website has my highly rendered, clean-cut work on it, but I also have a blog that features very loose, quick, concept-based art. The styles vary tremendously between the two websites, so depending on what you're looking for, it might help you to check both sites out.
