Introduction: I will empower and support you through the entire process and advise on each and every step. I focus on your needs and goals, as an interest-based attorney. I am very knowledgeable and experienced in many fields, particularly divorce, custody and other family law issues, I work closely with you to make decisions instead of simply telling you what you must do. I communicate regularly, explain clearly and provide very candid advice. That is the approach of a counselor and advocate. Settlement and litigation are equally important in every contested case. Settlement and negotiation is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of realistic understanding and a pragmatic approach to the legal process. I am a registered mediator and a litigator. I always encourage and develop ways to settle a case, but in the event parties cannot come to an agreement, my experience in litigation allows me to switch gears and strive to obtain the best outcome for my client in court. I am able to support and advocate for my clients in what is probably the most difficult situation they ever face. The law is perplexing, overwhelming and considerably complicated - given my litigation background, not only can I explain the process, I can walk my clients through the process, and advocate and fight for their position and benefit.

I had the opportunity to have Scott Smith represent me in a complex legal matter recently. I was very impressed with him and pleased with the outcome. Scott is that rare lawyer that is extremely knowledgeable about the law, yet practical with his solutions while at the same time being compassionate with his clients. I highly recommend him and will send my friends to him whenever they ask for a recommendation.

My husband and I highly recommend the services of Scott Smith. We were dealing with an angry contractor and needing Scott's services to help resolve a dispute and mechanics Lein. He was timely professional and made us feel as though we were part of the family. Nothing but absolute praise for one of the good guys!!!!!!

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

$225 per hour as an attorney representing a client. $175 per hour as a mediator. I require an advance (often referred to as a retainer) and require the advance be replenished on a periodic basis as needed throughout the case.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I provide a free 30 minute consult via telephone. We address the basic issues and I explain my experience, fees and process in handling the matter. I answer preliminary questions and lay out the next few steps.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I attended Indiana University Bloomington for my undergraduate degree in political science, which I earned with high distinction. I then attended law school at McKinney School of Law, graduating cum laude. Following law school, I completed substantial experience in litigation and turned to settlement as the primary goal of all cases. This goal required substantial training, leading to a certification as a registered domestic relations (divorce) mediator and registered civil mediator. I am also a collaboratively-trained lawyer. I have worked since I was 15 years old in a variety of positions from cash register to serving; from driving a forklift to putting in boat docks; from working in the family business to many other jobs of all levels of pay. I believe that all of this experience has created in me a work ethic like no one else. I have worked with a number of people in all types of positions, managed paralegals and secretaries and others, have built up my legal practice and assisted many others in establishing or expanding and protecting their businesses.
