Planning ahead

Things to know before you get started.
5 Steps to Hiring a Chimney Sweep
  1. 1. Schedule an annual chimney inspection

Fireplace damage is not always visible from the outside. The ideal time for the inspection is before using the fireplace the first time each year.

  2. 2. Hire an insured professional

Check the credentials of the chimney sweep or mason before hiring them. The person or company should be able to provide references as well as proof of being bonded, or insured.

  3. 3. Get a written estimate

At the end of the sweeping process, the pro should provide a written estimate of other work that needs done. Common things to replace include the chimney liner, bricks, mortar or the chimney cap.

  4. 4. Get a professional assessment

Things a professional will look for include cracks that can be found in the bricks and mortar inside or outside of the fireplace.

  5. 5. Plan payment

Expect to pay a percentage up front, based on the estimate amount, and be sure to get a receipt for the deposit.
