Brian showed up on time and was extremely professional. His knowledge of the various systems is outstanding. We had a jet engine noice coming from our heat pump on a 90 degree day. Scheduled Brian to come out and he provided us with two options. He helped show the pro and cons of both options to help us weigh our decision. Ultimately we ended up replacing the entire hvac unit. He was able to get a new unit in a day and the second installed the entire system. Not enough great adjectives in the dictionary to describe our awesome experience with Brian and his company. Price: awesome and very competitive Professionalism: top notch Work & knowledge: highest degree 100% highly recommend Brian and Akinfe!

Probably one of the most honest and reasonable guys that I’ve met in a long time. The limit switch button had engaged and he pushed its button and the furnace fired up. It took about a second of his time after arriving. He didn’t even charge me for the visit. When does anyone do that? He restored my faith in mankind. I will use him to replace my Hvac system because of his philosophy in life. I wish more people were like him. Another person would have probably invented a problem just to charge for nothing. Great guy! He explained why the system does this and how to rectify it in the future. Enough said.

We needed to replace our broken thermostat during a cold stretch of weather. It quit working on Sunday evening and we used Thumbtack to request service on Sunday night and Troy the installer was there by Monday evening. The thermostat that he had was incompatible, but he reset the system to keep us warm while they ordered the part and was back in two nights to install the new part. Tory was professional, competent and very personable and charged us half what our service contract company said they would charge.

I had Baiza Construction replace the floor and wall tile in each of our 3 bathrooms a year ago. I waited this long to submit a review just to be sure everything held up nicely. They also did all the plumbing to replace the shower fixtures. Honestly, all I have is good things to say about their crew. First, the price was very fair. Second, he said it would take 5 or 6 full days to finish, and it took them 5 days and just a few hours on the 6th day. The tile work came out perfect. Every day, the guys checked with me to verify any ideas I had, including what pattern I wanted, or exactly how high I wanted the fixtures. They were sure to keep a clean area throughout, and never left a mess overnight. Anyway, I'm very happy with the work that was done, and I would definitely hire them again, and have recommended them to others.

Nexgen did an outstanding job replacing our AC/heat pump. They were actually able to shift some things around and do the entire project the same day we called them (much appreciated in this 100+ degree weather). We had direct communication with the owners (Herb is such a great guy!!) and they made sure the project was finished successfully. Price was very competitive. Couldn't recommend them higher.

Tristan with Logan Mechanical was great! I am a mechanical engineer so I know enough to make conversation and he really knows his stuff. When I knew it was a refrigerant issue I called him up as that's where I draw the line for DIY. I had him and 2 other companies quote and his pricing was waaaaay better. We had a lot of coolant leaks and a bad txv but our air handler was in great shape. He was the only one who would do what I wanted which was to just replace both coils and the outdoor unit. Theres really nothing much that can go wrong I can't fix myself in our air handler because we have a heat pump. Doing it this way saved us around 50% versus other companies that said they would only allow us to replace the whole system and they despised me saying I would work on the air handler noting they would void my warranty on all work they did... I KNOW that's nice and all to have everything matched but I really needed the money for my upcoming wedding and the system Tristan recommended works great! Tristan was great to work with as well as Dexter. They came promptly on the day of work at 8AM and finished by 1 PM. Tristan also did some custom sheet metal fabrication in order to fit the coil I wanted, and was able to bump our fan speed up to give us better flow and accommodate 2 ducts I had him install in the basement. This guy is a pro and you can't even tell it's not stock! 10/10 will always use these guys for anything HVAC as long as I live in their service area.

Matt at Moses HVAC was great! I couldn't believe when my ac went out on Tues night around midnight that someone would answer my project within 10 minutes!! Matt showed the next morning at 11am and our ac was on by 12:30! Folks I am talking about an OLD ac unit too! He was reliable, affordable and didn't try to upsell like everyone else. I'll be sending as much business as I can Matt's way and will finally break down and replace that old unit with Moses HVAC next year. Thanks again Matt!

I had Temperature PRO come by to do a check-up of our heating system before the winter and they did an extremely thorough job performing the checks. I have had another company perform a check-up in the past and they came and took some quick looks in the unit and were in and out in 15-20 minutes, but Temperature PRO came by and did a really complete job looking in the furnace and heat pump that took at least an hour. They took off all the panels and used a variety of multi-meters and tools to check the electrical connections, clean out the entire unit, and check pressures using some tools they brought. The service technician (Nelson) was really great at walking me through the entire process and what they were looking for, along with tips and personal experiences. They actually identified some major issues with my heat pump that the other companies on their checks missed. I felt really confident that i had found the right people so I had them actually come out and replace the furnace and heat pump for the house. They were also running a promotion for free hot water heater replacement and installation if i was replacing both the furnace and the heat pump too (lucky me because this was something i had wanted done anyways). They walked me through my options and didn't pressure me on any of the installation options which i appreciated. Once i selected my options they were able to come in the next day to install the furnace, heat pump, and hot water heater. These guys did a really great job! I was extremely impressed with their work (took a full day to do all the work - which was a lot of work!). The work was clean, they didn't cut any corners, and were very professional and helpful through the whole installation. I would recommend Temperature PRO for any kind of heating\plumbing needs. They were able to provide GREAT service and were very helpful and friendly to work with. The prices were reasonable and i will absolutely be calling them again in the future for any other maintenance, check-ups, or fixes that i need. I highly recommend Temperature PRO.

Yonis is one of a kind plumber. He is extremely efficient and proactively understands the project requirements. I hired him to replace the toilet. He is articulate and tech savvy. He texted me the parts I would need along with locations in Home Depot where I would the items. He was on time and worked meticulously to install the toilet, at a very reasonable price. Most important , he is honest and sincere. I would not hesitate to hire him again and I wholeheartedly recommend him.

Responsiveness of the company and the courteousness of the technician (Robert) were both outstanding. I chose Modern Mechanical because of the low diagnosis fee ($59 versus $100-$120 for other quotes I received). The price to fix my problem once identified, however ($150 to replace an indoor LED-capable dimmer switch) was high in my opinion (e.g. Washington Checkbook Magazine in 2015 quoted an average price to replace an outdoor, GFCI outlet with a new waterproof cover of $178, and an average price to replace six indoor wall outlet receptacles and one light switch -- all with covers -- of $220). I also asked about replacing a 75 gal gas water heater and was quoted nearly $2,200 (compared with other quotes I've received of $1700 or so). I highly recommend Robert as a technician, however. Thorough, pleasant, communicative and professional.

He was able to fit me in his schedule a day early and worked in less than perfect conditions. He was very honest about the damage to our unit, and showed us exactly what was wrong. So refreshing, considering that we've had the unit "repaired" more than 5 times before under a warranty. We're hoping to get through this summer and replace the entire thing next spring. We will definitely be calling Andrew again when that time comes!!! Thanks Andrew!!!

I have only used Nice Home Services to replace the furnace in one rental unit. I hope to use them for other properties and services. So, I should probably reserve my comments until I have more than one experience to rate. But, they were very responsive and professional.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is an HVAC system?

The letters in HVAC stand for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. An HVAC system enables you to regulate your home or building’s internal temperature (thermal control) for comfortable living and working. You can bring heat levels down in the summer and up in the winter, keeping your home or office livable year-round. HVAC systems can also help with humidity levels and regulate indoor air quality in a home or office. There are many types of HVAC systems and technologies available.

Many homes have a forced-air HVAC system. Both the heating and the central air conditioning units share a ductwork system where they either push in or pull out warm or cooled air. There are also heating and cooling systems that don’t require ductwork — such as ductless mini-splits — but work on the same principles of heat exchange. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670, with costs varying depending on the work you need done and the equipment you are installing.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

How much does it cost to get central air?

Prices for central-air HVAC systems will vary. The national average to hire an HVAC specialist is $2,920-$3,670 but can run as high as $5,000 or even $12,000 depending on the capacity you need and other factors. Installing central air conditioning requires an entire system that works together to draw hot air out of your home. The system includes an outdoor unit, which houses the condenser and compressor, and the evaporator coils. If you don’t have an existing duct system, ductwork will need to be installed, which will affect labor and material costs. Leaking or damaged ducts will also need to be replaced.

How much does it cost for a new air conditioning unit?

If you’re ready for a new air conditioning unit, it’s time to start exploring HVAC prices. The price will vary depending on the type of air conditioner you buy and its cooling capacity. Window units, which require minimal installation, are one of the most affordable options on the market. If you’re purchasing from a big-box store, you can expect to pay approximately $120-$1,000 for a window unit. Window units are appealing for their quick setup and relatively low cost, but they can use more energy over time than central air and only cool the room in which they’re installed. Portable air conditioners don’t have the cooling power of a window unit, but they do have the perk of being transportable from room to room. Expect to pay between $225 and $800 for a portable air conditioner, on average. For a whole-house air conditioning system with coils, condenser and line (not including installation or ductwork), the cost from a big-box store can range from approximately $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you don’t have (and don’t want to put in) ducts, a ductless mini-split air conditioner is a good option, although pricey up front. Pricing can range from $650 to $4,250 per unit on average; you’ll need one unit for each room in which you want temperature control.
