Introduction: Above and beyond my 25 years of training in the traditional methods of Aikido, I have established a weekly session with some experienced fighters from Asian and Western styles in order to "play test" Aikido and improve on what I learned. I love helping students see beyond their preconceptions. Aikido often surprises people, whether it's my ex-Ranger buddy who sees us using some of the stuff he knows, or the student who didn't think she could take down a big guy.

I have been training in martial arts for most of my life, starting with the Kempo my father learned while in the special forces in Vietnam through through boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and san-shou. One constant despite that bouncing around has been Aikido; as much time as I've spent on various striking styles, I've always gravitated towards the philosophy and style of aiki. Suffice to say, I've had a number of teachers over the years. I am one of Mark's current students, and I feel incredibly fortunate for it; he has an innate understanding of how to teach, and combines it with a willingness to explore the martial arts holistically and honestly. Coming into his school as a somewhat non-traditional Aikido student, it's been fantastic to have such a skilled and open instructor to learn under, and it's easily among the finest training I've ever had.

FAQs

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Be wary of instructors who say they are "the best," or who have too many black belts in too many things. Our industry has no coherent standards. High rank or membership in an international organization are not guarantees, either way. Find an instructor you feel good about.
